A medication reminder and dispensing device includes a housing having at least one opening and at least one drawer containing at least one dose of a medication to be delivered to a patient. The drawer is slidably positioned in the opening and configured to move from a closed position to an open position. The device also includes at least one electromagnet connected to the housing or drawer configured to be transitioned between a first state and a second state. When in the first state, the electromagnet is configured to maintain the drawer in the closed position. When in the second state, the drawer automatically moves to the open position. The device also includes a processor configured to cause the at least one electromagnet to transition from the first state to the second state based on the pre-programmed schedule, thereby causing the drawer to automatically move to the open position.

An apparatus for dispensing pills comprising a pill storage section, a dispensing section located at a lower end of the storage section, an optical sensor, a memory, controller and wireless communication module and a supporting tray for one ring-shaped blister pack. A spring loaded lever is provided as push-out means in line with the respective pills of the blister pack and with the passage opening and can be operated for pushing out the pills to be dispensed through the passage opening. A motorized mechanism is provided as means for rotatable positioning of the blister pack stepwise relative to the part of the apparatus including the push-out means. Optical sensor detects presence of an object such as a person's hand at the passage opening and allows the pills to be dispensed automatically.

A camera is used to capture an image of the medication and the captured image is analyzed to detect a state of the medication. Information regarding a schedule by which the medication should be taken by the patient is accessed and an expected state of the medication is determined. The detected state is compared with the expected state and a determination is made that the patient has departed from the schedule based on the comparison revealing that the detected state does not match the expected state. A message indicating the departure from the schedule is sent based on the determination.

A tamper-resistant, handheld pill dispenser includes a housing including a container to hold a plurality of pills and an opening on a side of the housing. The opening is sized sufficiently to deposit the pills into the container. The dispenser also includes a locking assembly in the opening, and a delivery channel sufficient to pass a pill therethrough. The delivery channel extends from the container to an exterior of the dispenser. The dispenser also includes a user input device on an exterior of the housing and a dispensing mechanism within the dispenser adjacent to the container. The locking assembly can open and close the opening in the housing to restrict access to the container through the opening by unauthorized users. The dispensing mechanism can dispense a pill from the container to the exterior of the dispenser via the delivery channel when activated by an authorized user of the pill dispenser.

A container storing pills or other discrete objects and which provides restricted access to the pills. The container has a rotatable pill drum allowing selective access to pills when the drum is rotated to various dispensing positions. A rotatable combination disk or other component is provided that has a plurality of channels formed therein and which can be rotationally locked to the drum. Movable pegs engage the channels. Each dispensing position has an associated peg position combination. Rotation of the pill drum from one dispensing position to the next is blocked unless the pegs are moved into the appropriate peg position combination. The pill drum can be rotated from one dispensing position to the next using a handle or via an automatic spring loaded mechanism.

A dispensing device and a method of operating a dispensing device for use in studying a consumable unit used by a clinical study participant are provided. The device comprises a housing that includes a delivery aperture and a compartment configured to store an unconsumed consumable unit therein. The device further includes a dispensing mechanism located within the housing and configured to release the stored unconsumed consumable unit to the clinical study participant via the delivery aperture upon verifying the identity of the clinical study participant and a controller configured to interface with the dispensing mechanism and the user input device. A user input device is also included and is configured to receive input from the clinical study participant corresponding to identification information relating to the clinical study participant and is further configured to receive input from the clinical study participant in response to one or more questionnaires relating to consumption of the consumable unit.

A method and system of safe medication dispensing includes a smart medication container that includes a sensor and a signal transmitter and a smartphone that includes a processor, memory, local storage, and a signal receiver. A software application on the patient's smartphone inputs one or more of the patient's medications including the dosage, dosage schedule, and number of doses on hand. The software application alerts the patient to take a specific medication according to the medication's dosage schedule. The sensor senses when the patient opens the smart medication container and the signal transmitter transmits a status signal to the smartphone indicating the status of the container. Upon receiving the status signal, the software application updates the patient's dosage schedule. The software application may prompt the patient for refills, to log, or to report the taking of the medication to a third-party monitor.

An activity monitor is associated with a container, such as a medication bottle, and includes one or more detectors configured to detect activity associated with the bottle, such as movement, opening and/or closing, and changes in volume and/or mass. The activity monitor may include alerting devices and be programmed with scheduling information. The activity monitor may also, or instead, communicate with one or more remote devices such as a user device or monitoring system, such as to receive programming information from those devices or to output activity information to those devices.
