Optical modulator and optical module using this
An optical modulator including an optical modulation element including an optical waveguide formed on a substrate, and a housing that accommodates the optical modulation element. The housing has a high-thermal resistance portion within at least a part of an optical input and output region. The optical input and output region is an area ranging from an outer surface of a first short side wall to a first end portion of the optical modulation element, and the high-thermal resistance portion having a higher thermal resistance than a portion of the housing other than the optical input and output region.
SPLICE WITH CLADDING MODE LIGHT STRIPPING
Beam combining optical systems include a fiber beam combiner having multiple inputs to which output fibers of laser diode sources are spliced. Cladding light stripping regions are situated at the splices and include exposed portions of fiber claddings that are at least partially encapsulated with an optical adhesive or a polymer. A beam combiner fiber that is optically downstream of a laser source has an exposed cladding secured to a thermally conductive support with a polymer or other material that is index matched to the exposed cladding. This construction permits attenuation of cladding light propagating toward a beam combiner from a splice.
OPTICAL COUPLER INCLUDING A FARADAY ROTATOR LAYER AND AT LEAST ONE GRATING COUPLER
An optical coupling device can couple incident light from a fiber into waveguides, but can reduce the coupling of return light from the waveguides into the fiber. A Faraday rotator layer can rotate by forty-five degrees, with a first handedness, respective planes of polarization of incident beams, and can rotate by forty-five degrees, with a second handedness opposite the first handedness, respective planes of polarization of return beams. A redirection layer can include at least one grating coupler that can redirect an incident beam of one polarization so that the redirected path extends within the redirection layer toward a first waveguide, and can redirect an incident beam of an opposite polarization so that the redirected path extends within the redirection layer toward a second waveguide. An optional birefringent layer can spatially separate incident beam having different polarizations, so that two single-polarization grating couplers can be used.
Tunable nanocircuit and waveguide system and method on optical fiber
The present disclosure provides devices, systems, circuits, and effective methods for advanced optical applications using plasmonics and ENZ materials. The disclosure provides for enhancement of the optical tunability of phase and amplitude of propagating plasmons, nonlinear-optical effects, and resonant network in optical fiber tip nanocircuits and integrates the tunable plasmonic and ENZ effects for in-fiber applications to provide optical fiber with high operating speed and low power consumption. The invention yields efficient coupling of a plasmonic functional nanocircuit on the facet of an optical fiber core. The invention also can use gate-tunable ENZ materials to electrically and nonlinear optically tune the plasmonic nanocircuits for advanced light manipulation. The invention efficiently integrates and manipulates the voltage-tuned ENZ resonance for phase and amplitude modulation in optical fiber nanocircuits.
OPTICAL WAVEGUIDE DEVICE OPERATED AS MODE CONVERTER
An optical waveguide device includes first and second waveguides formed parallel to each other. The first waveguide includes a first rib and a first slab. The first slab is formed in a region between the first rib and the second waveguide. The second waveguide includes a second rib, a second slab and a third slab. The second rib is provided between the second slab and the third slab. The first and second slabs are integrally formed. At one end of the optical waveguide device, a first effective refractive index that indicates an effective refractive index of a TEi mode in the first waveguide is higher than a second effective refractive index that indicates an effective refractive index of a TEj mode in the second waveguide. At another end, the first effective refractive index is lower than the second effective refractive index.
POLARIZATION SPLITTER-ROTATOR HAVING SILICON BASED WAVEGUIDE WITH SILICON NITRIDE SEGMENT
A polarization splitter-rotator (PSR) is described. The PSR having a silicon nitride based waveguide to split and rotate an optical beam. The silicon nitride based waveguide having a first silicon nitride segment including a first layer and a second layer coupled with the first layer.
Back reflection circulator in silicon photonic chip methods and apparatus
Apparatuses and methods associated with silicon photonic chips, are disclosed herein. In some embodiments, a quarter wave plate (QWP) is provided to a silicon photonic chip to convert a first linearly polarized mode (e.g., TE mode) optical beam from a laser disposed on the silicon photonic chip, into a combination of orthogonal polarization modes optical beam, and to convert or contribute in converting a reflection of the combined polarized modes optical beam into a second linearly polarized mode (e.g., TM) optical beam with polarization orthogonal to the first. The optical beam is rotated relative to an axis of the QWP, or the QWP and its axis are rotated relative to a polarization axis of the optical beam. Other embodiments are also described and claimed.
LIGHT SOURCE OPTICAL SYSTEM, LIGHT SOURCE DEVICE, LIGHT SOURCE UNIT, AND IMAGE DISPLAY APPARATUS
A light source optical system includes: a first optical system configured to guide a first light beam having a first wavelength emitted from a light source to a wavelength conversion element; the wavelength conversion element configured to convert the first light beam into a second light beam having a second wavelength different from the first wavelength, and emit the second light beam; and a second optical system through which the second light beam emitted from the light conversion element passes. The second optical system includes a light guide element configured to guide a portion of the second light beam from one end surface of the light guide element to the other end surface of the light guide element to separate the portion of the second light beam from the second light beam.

The cladding is disposed around the waveguide. The scattering array is formed in the cladding. The scattering array is configured to perturb the infrared optical field routed by the waveguide to direct the infrared optical field into an infrared beam propagating toward a surface of the cladding.
Integrated optical circulator enabling polarization diversity
A photonic integrated circulator can be fabricated by including a plurality of polarizing beam splitters and optical polarization rotators such that two copies of the optical signal are output at a receiver in substantially aligned polarization states. The circulator can be used for facilitating bi-directional communications between photonic integrated circuit devices, which are inherently polarization sensitive, while reducing signal loss.
