The invention relates to spectacles, systems and methods for visibility enhancement, including by glare suppression. The spectacles, systems and methods for visibility enhancement includes spectacles and a spectacle lens having a liquid crystal cell (LC), the transmission (TR) of which may be varied by a suitable control and the liquid crystal cell (LC) designed so that the transmission (TR) of the liquid crystal cell (LC) may be switched between high and low transmission states. The liquid crystal cell (LC) includes a control for regulating the times of the state of high transmission (T.sub.on) of the liquid crystal cell (LC) such that the temporal position of the times of the high transmission state (T.sub.on) within a period of times of the high transmission state (T.sub.on) and times of the low transmission state (T.sub.off) may be altered continuously or discontinuously; and/or the duration of a period of times of the high transmission state (T.sub.on) and times of the low transmission state (T.sub.off) may be altered continuously or discontinuously. Such changes may be determined by a secret coding key.

According to various embodiments, a tunable optical device comprises a tunable optical metasurface on a substrate with an integrated driver circuit. In some embodiments, the tunable optical device includes a photon shield layer to prevent optical radiation from disrupting operation of the driver circuit. In some embodiments, the tunable optical device includes a diagnostic circuit to detect and disable defective optical structures of the metasurface. In some embodiments, the tunable optical device includes an integrated heater circuit that maintains a liquid crystal of the metasurface above a minimum operating temperature. In some embodiments, the tunable optical device includes an integrated lidar sequencing controller, a steering pattern subcircuit, and a photodetector circuit.

The second display area includes second pixel areas including one or more second pixels and a light transmittance area having a higher light transmittance than the second pixel area. The first and second display areas include a common electrode that transmits a constant common voltage. The common electrode in the second display area includes patterned regions that correspond to a first light transmittance area included in the light transmittance area. A thickness of the common electrode in the patterned regions is smaller than a thickness of the common electrode in a region other than the patterned regions or equals zero. The patterned regions and the second pixel areas extend alternately along a first direction in the second display area.
