The seal material includes a plurality of gap materials that controls a substrate-to-substrate distance between the element substrate and the opposite substrate. A concave portion is formed in the opposite substrate within a region surrounded by the seal material, and is configured to allow the substrate-to-substrate distance in a display region to be broader than the substrate-to-substrate distance in a region overlapping with the seal material.

According to one embodiment, a liquid crystal display apparatus includes a first substrate including a first electrode and an insulating layer arranged so as to cover an edge of the first electrode, a second substrate including a second electrode facing the first electrode and a second slit from which the second electrode is removed, and a liquid crystal layer interposed between the first substrate and the second substrate. The first electrode includes a plurality of first slits extending inwardly from the edge of the first electrode. The insulating layer and the plurality of first slits are arranged such that a position of an end of the insulating layer and a position of a tip to which the first slit extends are apart from each other in a region between the edge of the first electrode and the second slit in a direction in which the first slit extends.

The display includes: a substrate having a central portion; a thin film transistor disposed on the substrate; a pixel electrode connected to the thin film transistor; and a roof layer disposed to face the pixel electrode; and a liquid crystal layer disposed between the pixel electrode and the roof layer and formed by a plurality of microcavities, wherein the microcavities hold a liquid crystal material, wherein a difference between a maximum cell gap and a minimum cell gap in each of the microcavities increases with distance from the central portion of the substrate.

An optical device includes a first electrode, a second electrode, a refractive index adjustment layer, and a textured layer. The first electrode is light-transmissive. The second electrode is light-transmissive and electrically paired with the first electrode. The refractive index adjustment layer is provided between the first electrode and the second electrode and has a refractive index that is adjustable in an arbitrary wavelength band from the visible light range to the near-infrared range. The textured layer gives the refractive index adjustment layer an uneven surface and is in the form of a film. The refractive index adjustment layer is variable between a transparent state and a state of distributing incident light.
