Method for obtaining a material comprising a liquid crystal mix with a stabilized blue phase and optical article comprising this material

A method for obtaining a material containing mesogenic compounds forming a liquid crystal mix with a stabilized blue phase. The method includes the steps of a) inducing the liquid crystal mix, contained in a chemical composition, to form the blue phase, then b) illuminating the chemical composition with a light beam of visible wavelength in order to trigger the polymerization of monomers contained in the chemical composition, to obtain the material comprising the liquid crystal mix in the blue phase stabilized by the polymerized monomers. The chemical composition contains a mesogenic system and a chemical photo-initiator system adapted to trigger the polymerization of the monomers when illuminated by the light beam of visible wavelength, in which the mesogenic system includes the mesogenic compounds forming the liquid crystal mix, a chiral dopant adapted to induce the blue phase, and a monomer mix comprising the monomers adapted to polymerize.

At least one of the first linear polarizer and the second linear polarizer are selectively switchable between (i) a first condition in which light having the first linear polarization and light having the second linear polarization is transmitted and (ii) a second condition in which light of the first linear polarization is absorbed and light of the second linear polarization is transmitted.

Electronic devices with curved display surfaces

An electronic device may have a display mounted in a housing. The display may have a pixel array that produces images. A display cover layer may overlap the pixel array. The display cover layer may have a planar central area surrounded by a peripheral edge area with a curved cross-sectional profile. From an on-axis viewing angle, an image on the pixel array is fully viewable through the planar central area and the peripheral edge area. From an off-axis viewing angle, the image is partly viewable through the peripheral edge area and not through the central area. To avoid an undesired color cast in the partly viewable image seen through the peripheral edge area of the display cover layer, the display may be provided with color cast compensation structures such as a guest-host liquid crystal layer that exhibits an anisotropic colored light absorption characteristic, a diffuser layer, and/or other optical structures.
