Switchable broadband waveplate
An optical waveplate is provided. The optical waveplate includes a plurality of liquid crystal (“LC”) layers stacked together. At least one of the plurality of LC layers includes LC molecules that are in-plane switchable by an external field to switch the optical waveplate between states of different phase retardances.

Optical Systems Having Polarization Recycling Structures
A display may include illumination optics, a ferroelectric liquid crystal on silicon (fLCOS) panel, and a waveguide. The illumination optics may produce linear polarized illumination light that is modulated by the fLCOS panel to produce image light. The illumination optics may include light emitters that emit respective wavelengths of the illumination light. The illumination optics may include an X-plate that outputs the illumination light by combining the light emitted by the light emitters. Polarization recycling structures may be optically interposed between each of the light emitters and the X-plate. The polarization recycling structures may include a reflective polarizer. If desired, the polarizing recycling structures may also include a quarter waveplate. The polarization recycling structures may serve to minimize the amount of light lost in producing linearly polarized illumination light for the fLCOS display panel, thereby maximizing the optical efficiency of the display.
Speckle-reduced direct-retina holographic projector including multiple spatial light modulators
A direct-retina holographic projection system includes first and second spatial light modulators (SLMs) and a control module. The first SLM receives a beam of light and dithers the beam of light at a predetermined frequency to provide multiple instances of the beam of light. The second SLM receives the instances of the beam of light, displays an encoded phase hologram of a graphic image to be projected, and diffracts the instances of the beam of light to provide instances of the encoded phase hologram with the same graphic image but multiplied with dithered wavefronts. The control module: iteratively adjusts a parameter of the first SLM to generate the instances of the beam of light; and controls operation of the second SLM to, based on the instances of the beam of light, display multiple instances of the graphic image on a retina of an eye of a viewer.
OPTICAL FILTER MATERIALS AND DEVICES
A method of aligning a chiral nematic liquid crystal (103), the method comprising depositing a first chiral nematic liquid crystal (103) onto a first substrate (102), positioning a second substrate (104) on top of the liquid crystal (103) to form an initial layer structure and then applying rolling pressure to at least one of the substrates (102, 104) of the initial layer structure to create a final layer structure in which the first chiral nematic liquid crystal (103) is aligned with a helical axis substantially perpendicular to a local plane of the first substrate (102). Aspects of the invention provide optical filter materials for laser protection applications, LED emission filtering and lighting, augmented reality display coatings.
