SURGICAL ROBOTIC USER INPUT APPARATUS HAVING OPTICAL FIBER-BASED INTRINSIC SENSORS
A surgical robotic user input apparatus has a fiber optic cable with a handheld user input device attached at one end, and a connector attached at another end. Multiple intrinsic sensors, such as fiber Bragg grating sensors, are in the fiber optic cable. The intrinsic sensors are used to detect a pose of the handheld user input device. Other embodiments are also described and claimed.
Method and apparatus for optical sensing
The present invention provides novel apparatus and methods for fast quantitative measurement of perturbation of optical fields transmitted, reflected and/or scattered along a length of an optical fiber. The present invention can be used for point sensors as well as distributed sensors or the combination of both. In particular this technique can be applied to distributed sensors while extending dramatically the speed and sensitivity to allow the detection of acoustic perturbations anywhere along a length of an optical fiber while achieving fine spatial resolution. The present invention offers unique advantages in a broad range of acoustic sensing and imaging applications. Typical uses are for monitoring oil and gas wells such as for distributed flow metering and/or imaging, seismic imaging, monitoring long cables and pipelines, imaging within large vessel as well as for security applications.

FIBRE-OPTIC SENSOR FOR MEASURING A PHYSICAL QUANTITY
A fibre-optic sensor for measuring a physical quantity, such as a pressure, force, acceleration or tilt, includes an optical fibre having a measurement section for measuring a strain in the fibre, and first and second structural members. The optical fibre is connected to a first fibre connection section of the first structural member and to a second fibre connection section of the second structural member. The first and second connection sections are arranged on opposite sides of the measurement section, such that at least the measurement section is suspended between the first and second fibre connection sections. At least one of the structural members is movable relative to the other in dependence of the physical quantity that is measured. The structural members are made from materials having different coefficients of thermal expansion such that a temperature induced strain in said optical fibre due to a temperature change is reduced.
METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR OPTICAL FIBER SENSING
A method of optical sensing is disclosed. The method comprises coupling an excitation optical signal into a first optical fiber to induce Rayleigh backscattering, thereby providing a backscattered signal; coupling the backscattered signal into a second optical fiber, spatially separated from the first optical fiber; and optically amplifying the backscattered signal in the second optical fiber, thereby generating a sensing signal.
STRETCHABLE FIBER OPTIC SENSOR
The present disclosure relates to a stretchable fiber optic sensor that can measure tension, bending, and torsion direction of an object. The fiber optic sensor includes an optical fiber with a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) embedded in a sinusoidal configuration at an off-center position of a deformable substrate.
Directional sensitive fiber optic cable wellbore system
A fiber optic cable assembly includes an elongate housing, a signal fiber placed inside the housing and extending longitudinally, and a plurality of sensing fibers placed inside the housing and extending longitudinally. The plurality of sensing fibers is placed around the signal fiber. Each of the plurality of sensing fibers carries a respective laser signal of a distinct frequency. The signal fiber carries one or more evanescent coupling signals responsive to the laser signals in the plurality of sensing fibers.
