SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR COLOR SCANNING A MOVING ARTICLE
An optical apparatus and a method for color scanning a surface of an article moving along a travel path axis make use of an imaging sensor unit including a digital color camera capable of generating highly focused color images, even when distance from surface to camera varies, by providing the camera with an objective defining an optical plane disposed in Scheimpflug configuration. A beam of collimated polychromatic light of an elongated cross-section is directed within a Scheimpflug scanning plane of focus and toward a scanning zone to form a reflected linear band of light onto the article surface of an intensity substantially uniform within the depth of sensing field. The reflected linear band of light is captured by the digital camera to generate a two-dimensional color image thereof, from which a single line color image data is extracted. The line data extraction is repeated as the article moves to generate successive line color image data, from which a two-dimensional color image of the article is built.

METHOD OF FACILITATING CHECK GRADER REACTION TO OUTPUT PRODUCED BY AUTOMATIC BOARD LUMBER GRADING SYSTEM
A method of improving board feature quality grading facilitates human check grader reaction to grading output. The method entails specifying, for application by an automatic grading system to the faces of boards passing through a scanning zone, a virtual grade expressed by a range of values that overlap values in two of successive standard rule-based grades representing higher and lower board feature qualities; producing a signal in response to detection of a board feature quality representing a virtual grade value of a board analyzed by the automatic grading system; indicating, in response to the signal, a virtual grading designation onto the board to alert a check grader to assess whether the board exhibits board feature quality that exceeds the lower board feature quality; and assigning to the board the standard rule-based grade representing the higher board feature quality whenever the check grader's assessment concurs with the virtual grade designation.
Method and device for evaluating a wooden board
The present disclosure relates to a method and device for evaluating a wooden board with an elongated direction. Data indicating fiber orientation over the surface of the board is acquired and for a number of board sub-portions a nominal local modulus of elasticity, MOE, is determined based on the fiber orientation data and a nominal material parameter. A nominal global MOE in the elongated direction for the wooden board as a whole is generated and compared with a secondary global MOE. Based on the fiber orientation data and this comparison an estimated local modulus of elasticity, MOE, in said elongated direction is generated for a number of board sub-portions. This data may be used e.g. for reliable strength grading of wooden boards.
Check grader-actuatable interface for board lumber scanning
A lumber check grader-actuatable interface enables a check grader to interact with grade-quality measured boards of lumber conveyed along a flow path and passing in front of the check grader. The interface accurately and continuously tracks the location of each board in front of a check grader and tracks the location of the check grader's hands relative to the boards. Gestures can, therefore, be used for a selected board to perform additional actions, such as changing the grade or changing the trims. The interface enables a check grader to walk alongside and keep pace with a board of interest as it is transported and to provide feedback to the interface about a needed change for the board of interest. By knowing which board is of interest to a check grader, the interface can display additional information for only that board without overwhelming the check grader with non-stop information overload.
Apparatus and method for optically scanning a surface of an object under adverse external condition
An apparatus and a method for optically scanning a surface of an object under an adverse external condition to which optical components are subjected, such as cameras and lighting sources sensitive to soiling, make use of a first imaging sensor unit having its optical components subjected to the adverse external condition, and being configured for generating reflection intensity image data associated with a target surface. A second imaging sensor unit having its optical components substantially not subjected to the adverse external condition, is configured for generating reflection intensity image data associated with a reference surface. Correction data are calculated from a comparison between the reflected intensity image data associated with the target and reference surfaces, which correction data are then applied to the reflected intensity image data associated with the target surface to generate corrected intensity image data compensating for the adverse external condition.
