A receive beamformer sets synthetic apertures on an array of transducers that have received echoes of transmission of one transmit beam, and performs processing on received signals of transducers within the receive apertures to form receive beams, followed by performing synthetic aperture processing on the receive beams obtained by the transmission of transmit beams. The positions of the transmit aperture and the receive aperture in the transducer array direction are shifted for every transmission of the transmit beam. A motion vector of the receive aperture along the array direction of the transducers is made different from a motion vector of the transmit aperture so that a distance between phase centers in the successive transmission events is smaller than the case where the transmit aperture and the receive aperture are shifted with a constant vector for each transmission.

A system is provided for imaging an underwater environment. The system includes a transducer assembly with at least one transmit transducer element and an array of receive transducer elements. Each receive transducer element is configured to receive sonar returns and form sonar return data. A sonar signal processor is configured to receive the sonar return data from each receive transducer element and generate sonar image data. The sonar return data from all of the receive transducer elements may be summed and used to form a high-definition 1D (e.g., time-based) sonar image. The sonar return data from only a subgroup may be summed and used to form a lower-definition 1D sonar image. In some systems, an array of series-connected transmit transducer elements can be used. The orientation of the emitting faces of the array may vary slightly to mimic a curved surface for increased beam coverage.

An ultrasonic diagnostic imaging system scans a plurality of planar slices in a volumetric region which are parallel to each other. Following detection of the image data of the slices the slice data is combined by projecting the data in the elevation dimension to produce a “thick slice” image. Combining may be by means of an averaging or maximum intensity detection or weighting process or by raycasting in the elevation dimension in a volumetric rendering process. Thick slice images are displayed at a high frame rate of display by combining a newly acquired slice with slices previously acquired from different elevational planes which were used in a previous combination. A new thick slice image may be produced each time at least one of the slice images is updated by a newly acquired slice. Frame rate is further improved by multiline acquisition of the slices.
