ON-CHIP OPTICAL SWITCH BASED ON AN ECHELLE GRATING

An on-chip optical switch based on an echelle grating and a phase tuning element is described herein. The phase tuning element may change a refractive index of the material through which an optical signal propagates, thereby causing a change in the angle of propagation of the optical signal. By dynamically tuning the phase change element, the refractive index change may be controlled such that the deviation of the optical signal causes the optical signal to be focused on a particular coupling waveguide out of an array of coupling waveguides. The echelle grating with the active phase change element form a configurable optical switch capable of switching an optical signal between two or more coupling waveguides, that may be respectively connected to different optical signal processing pathways.

Thin waveguide wavelength-selective projector

A device for providing a 1D line of an image is disclosed. The device includes a wavelength-tunable light source for providing image light having the angular distribution encoded in optical spectrum. The device further includes a thin slab waveguide having an out-coupler in form of a diffraction grating for out-coupling the image light at an angle dependent on wavelength. The image may be formed by scanning a collimated beam propagating in the slab waveguide when using tunable monochromatic light sources, or by forming the 1D singular distribution of brightness at a same time when using a tunable-spectrum light sources. The device may be used in a near-eye display for forming a 2D image in angular domain.

Switchable coherent pixel array for frequency modulated continuous wave light detection and ranging

A LIDAR transceiver includes an input port, optical antennas, an optical switch, splitters, and mixers. The optical switch switchably couples an input port to the optical antennas. For at least one optical path from the input port to one of the optical antennas, a splitter is coupled along the optical path. The splitter splits a received portion of a laser signal into a local oscillator signal and a transmit signal and outputs a return signal that is a portion of the reflected signal. The transmit signal is emitted through the optical antenna and a reflection of the transmit signal is received through the optical antenna as a reflected signal.

The technology described herein relates to a wavelength selective switch (WSS). An output port arrangement solution of an optical fiber array of the WSS includes: centers of output ports are arranged along a curve or along a combination line that includes a line segment, and a straight line connecting centers of any two output ports on the curve or the combination line does not pass through an input port. A light beam received from the input port is diffracted to the output ports through an LCoS panel, and a straight line that all diffraction orders that are generated after the diffraction pass through intersects with the curve or the line segment, and there is only one intersection point.
