A connection system includes an optical connector assembly; and an optical plug. The connector assembly includes a stack of gel-groove assemblies and a spring assembly mounted within a housing. Each of the gel-groove assemblies includes a first gel block at a first axial end, a second gel block at a second axial end, and a fiber mating region between the first and second gel blocks. The optical plug including sub-modules over-molded over arrays (e.g., ribbons) of the optical fibers. Each sub-module defines notches for receiving latches of the spring assembly when the optical plug is coupled to the first axial end of the optical adapter. Bare optical fibers extend from the plug, pass through the first axial gel block, and enter the fiber mating region when the plug is coupled to the adapter.

OPTICAL DEVICE

A first optical device is adapted to couple to a second optical device along a coupling direction and includes two spaced apart pairs of leading and trailing pads, such that when the first optical device lands and slides on a landing surface of the second optical device to optically couple to the second optical device, and for each pair of leading and trailing pads, the leading pad prevents any debris on the landing surface from collecting on the trailing pad. Upon full coupling of the first optical device with the second optical device, the leading pads do not make contact with the landing surface. The first optical device may be, for example, an optical ferrule or a cradle having a recess adapted to receive an optical ferrule.

Disclosed herein are devices and methods for cleaning, verifying cleaning, and coating a ferrule end face in a single housing thereby preventing contamination of the ferrule end face and associated optical fiber end face. Also disclosed herein is a fiber optic assembly including a ferrule; an optical fiber extending through the ferrule to an end face of the ferrule; and a coating on the end face of the ferrule protecting the optical fiber. The coating is prepared by curing a vinyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane with a crosslinker in the presence of a catalyst.

Cleaning nozzles and methods for optical fiber connectors or adapters

A cleaning nozzle includes an inner nozzle housing having a feed passage for carrying cleaning fluid, a plurality of nozzle tips that each define a discharge opening in fluid communication with the feed passage, and an outer nozzle housing received over the inner nozzle housing. The outer nozzle housing includes a plurality of outer nozzle extensions that each extend over one of the nozzle tips. The outer nozzle extensions can be inserted into ports of an adapter, and flow of the cleaning fluid through the nozzle is split between the nozzle tips so that multiple optical connectors that populate the adapter can be cleaned simultaneously in a substantially uniform manner.

Configurable modular connectors

A modular optical connector includes a plurality of coupled optical ferrule support modules. Each optical ferrule support module comprises module connecting features configured to couple each ferrule support module with one or more neighboring ferrule support modules of the plurality of ferrule support modules. One or more optical ferrules are disposed and configured to rotate within the ferrule support module. Each optical ferrule includes a first attachment area configured to attach to one or more optical waveguides. One or more passageways are disposed within the ferrule support module. Each passageway is configured to receive the one or more optical waveguides. The passageway comprises a second attachment area configured to attach to the optical waveguides that are attached to the optical ferrule at the first attachment area. The passageway is dimensioned to constrain the optical waveguides to bend within the housing between the first attachment area and the second attachment area.

OPTICAL CONNECTOR CLEANING TOOL AND OPTICAL CONNECTOR CLEANING METHOD

An object is to provide an optical connector cleaning tool capable of cleaning both an end face and a side face of a ferrule of an optical connector plug simultaneously and simply and a method of cleaning an optical connector in such a manner. An optical connector cleaning tool according to the present invention includes superimposing a plurality of cleaning sheets on each other, the cleaning sheets each including a plurality of cleaning strings arranged so as to be parallel to each other in a sheet shape, such that orientations of the cleaning strings included in the respective cleaning sheets differ from each other, pressing an end face of a ferrule of an optical connector plug against the cleaning sheets to clean the end face of the ferrule, and subsequently, sticking the ferrule through the cleaning sheets to clean a side face of the ferrule.

Optical ferrule

An optical ferrule (200) has opposing major top (10) and bottom (20) surfaces where the bottom surface includes discrete spaced apart first (90) and second (100) platforms arranged along a mating direction of the optical ferrule (200). During a mating of the ferrule (200) with a mating optical ferrule (200′), the first (90) and second (100) platforms of the ferrule (200) slide against corresponding respective first (90′) and second (100′) platforms of the mating ferrule (200′). Upon full mating of the ferrule (200) with the mating ferrule (200′), the second platforms (100, 100′) of the ferrule and the mating ferrule remain in contact with and rest on each other, and the first platform (90, 90′) of neither ferrule makes contact with the other ferrule.
