Ferrule assemblies having a lens array are disclosed. In one embodiment, a ferrule assembly includes a ferrule body and a fiber array ferrule. The ferrule body includes a first end face and a second end face, at least one cavity for receiving one or more optical fibers disposed between the first end face and the second end face, and at least one body alignment feature at an outer surface of the body. The fiber array ferrule includes a first end face and a second end face, an array of alignment holes extending between the first end face and the second end face, and at least one ferrule alignment feature at an outer perimeter of the fiber array ferrule. The second end face of the fiber array ferrule is coupled to the first end face of the body.

The guiding and the aligning is through both (i) attraction when the connector is properly aligned to the port and (ii) repulsion when the connector is improperly aligned to the port. The port further includes a securing magnet configured to be activated when the connector reaches the mounted position, to magnetically secure the connector to the port.

The ferrule has an integral ferrule insertion stop that limits the depth that the ferrule may be inserted into the ferrule sleeve.

The connectors include respective ferrules, an end of a single-mode optical fiber and a collimator lens is mounted in each ferrule, and the collimator lens is disposed at the tip of the single-mode optical fiber. The optical fiber connection mechanism is configured so that when the ferrules are inserted into ends of the split sleeve, the collimator lenses face each other with a gap therebetween and the single-mode optical fibers are optically connected to each other. The ferrules are loosely fit in the corresponding connectors to be displaceable within a predetermined range in the direction along the optical axis of the single-mode optical fibers.
