A first optical axis of the first phase retardation layer is orthogonal to a second optical axis of the second phase retardation layer. A first absorption axis of the polarizer is in the same direction as a second absorption axis of the switchable polarizer. The polarity of the switchable polarizer can be turned on or off according to a display state or a non-display state of the display panel, respectively.

The compound can be a rod-like chiral luminogen bearing a chiral moiety at one end and long aliphatic chains at an opposing end. The compound emits circularly polarized light or luminescence (CPL) in the aggregate state. For example, the compound does not exhibit a chiroptical signal when dispersed in solution, but demonstrates tunable CPL signals in the aggregate state.

A switchable optical device includes a first polarizer configurable to polarize incident light into light of a first circular polarization state, and a second polarizer configurable to transmit light of a second circular polarization state and reflect light of the first circular polarization state into light of the first circular polarization state. The switchable optical device also includes a partial reflector positioned between the first polarizer and the second polarizer. The partial reflector is configured to transmit light from the first polarizer and reflect light from the second polarizer, where the reflected light and the light from the second polarizer have different polarization states. At least one of the first polarizer or the second polarizer includes a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) circular polarizer that is switchable by a voltage signal.

Helical photonic crystal-based reflective-type color display and method for manufacturing the same

A reflective-type color display according to the present disclosure includes a lower substrate and an upper substrate, a polarization plate positioned on an outer surface of the upper substrate, a plurality of helical photonic crystals arranged between the lower substrate and the upper substrate and having different reflection properties of light in the visible region, and a tunable wave plate positioned on the plurality of helical photonic crystals to control the reflection intensity by continuously changing the phase retardation. According to an embodiment, it is possible to simultaneously achieve the features of three primary colors, analog grey levels, high resolution, and fast response through the separation of the function of color reflection from the intensity tuning capability of the photonic crystal, beyond the limitation of existing reflective-type display technology.
