According to an aspect, a display apparatus includes: an image display panel that displays an image thereon; a planar light source that includes a plurality of light sources and irradiates a plurality of divided areas of the image display panel with light from the back side of the image display panel; and a signal processor that drives the light sources individually based on input signals of the image to control brightness of the individual divided areas. The signal processor performs image display on the image display panel using output signals obtained by lowering brightness of a dark region in the image represented by the input signals.

A display device is provided. The display device includes a display panel and a backlight module. The display panel includes sub-pixels and a light-shielding layer disposed around the sub-pixels. A reflective nano-grating is disposed on one side of the light-shielding layer near the backlight module. The backlight module provides a backlight source for the display panel, and the backlight source is converted into a polarized light in the display panel. The reflective nano-grating is used to reflect at least one part of the polarized light emitted toward the reflective nano-grating back to the backlight module for recycling.

Subject matter disclosed herein relates to arrangements and techniques that provide for using a wavelength specific illumination for illuminating a display, for example an electrowetting display. The electrowetting display comprises a first substrate and a second substrate. A plurality of pixel regions is provided between the first substrate and the second substrate. The electrowetting display further comprises a first fluid within the pixel regions and on the first substrate. The first fluid comprises one or more dyes and a second fluid is disposed on the first fluid. The second fluid is substantially immiscible with the first fluid. An illumination layer is included between the first substrate and the second substrate. The illumination layer comprises one or more LEDs and at least one of the LEDs produces light at a specific wavelength corresponding to a wavelength of absorption of one of the one or more dyes.

A signal line for supplying an image signal is provided in each of Region A and Region B. Region A and Region B adjoin each other such that a boundary line showing the boundary between the regions is bent. Bending the boundary line suppresses formation of a stripe in a boundary portion. For example, in a given column, the total number of pixels electrically connected to a signal line in Region A is made different from the total number of pixels electrically connected to a signal line in Region B.
