A hydrogen storage assembly includes an enclosure substantially encompassing an electrolyzer, a hydrogen storage system, a hydrogen fuel cell, an electrochemical energy storage module, a power conversion system, and a control system. The electrolyzer is configured to separate, via electrolysis, water into hydrogen gas that is stored in the hydrogen storage system; the hydrogen fuel cell is configured to convert the stored hydrogen gas into electrical energy and water. The electrochemical energy storage module is configured to function as an energy buffer; the power conversion system is configured to convert the produced electrical energy to a desired form. The control system is configured to to control the storage and distribution of the stored hydrogen and electrical energy in an optimized manner to achieve predefined financial and energy-use objectives.

Modular and scalable flow battery system

A modular flow battery includes a battery stack container housing a plurality of redox flow battery stacks in fluid communication with at least one pair of electrolyte containers including an anolyte container for holding an anolyte and a catholyte container for holding a catholyte. Additional pairs of electrolyte containers can be connected to the battery stack container to increase an amount of energy that can be stored by the modular flow battery system. Respective housings enclosing each of the battery stack container and the electrolyte containers are configured for operation in a stacked configuration. In this manner, the energy storage capacity of the modular flow battery system can be further increased with substantially no increase in a lateral area occupied by the system.

The heat exchanger is configured to receive process gas from an external source and output said process gas to the fuel cell stack assembly, and configured to receive process gas from the fuel cell stack assembly and output said process gas. A fuel cell power plant is provided including a module assembly with a first end, a racking structure configured to hold the module assembly, balance of plant equipment, and ducting configured to provide fluid communication between the balance of plant equipment and the first end of the module assembly. The module assembly and the racking structure are configured such that the module assembly may be removed from the racking structure in a direction away from the first end of the module assembly.

A power cable is provided which is coupled at one end to the fuel cell arrangement and extending through an exterior wall of the outer chamber such that a second end of the cable extends outside the chamber. The enclosed chamber is substantially sealed such that in use, leaking of the working fluid is substantially prevented.

A flow battery includes a positive electrode, a positive electrode electrolyte, a negative electrode, a negative electrode electrolyte, and a polymer electrolyte membrane interposed between the positive electrode and the negative electrode. The positive electrode electrolyte includes water and a first redox couple. The first redox couple includes a first organic compound which includes a first moiety in conjugation with a second moiety. The first organic compound is reduced during discharge while during charging the reduction product of the first organic compound is oxidized to the first organic compound. The negative electrode electrolyte includes water and a second redox couple. The second couple includes a second organic compound including a first moiety in conjugation with a second moiety. The reduction product of the second organic compound is oxidized to the second organic compound during discharge.

The energy storage system is configured such that: when no excess power is available, the combustion turbine receives the reformed natural gas from the reformer, and when excess power is available, the MCEC operates in a hydrogen-generation mode in which the MCEC anode receives the reformed natural gas from the reformer, and outputs MCEC anode exhaust that contains hydrogen.
