The waveguide columns can have a rectangular cross-section, with the columns defined by two opposing wide inner surfaces, a narrow inner back surface, and a narrow inner front surface, with the plurality of cavity slots extending from the front side of the housing to said narrow inner front surface. A signal probe is disposed in the columns. Conductive parallel plate blinds are conductively secured to the front side of the housing.

High data rate aircraft to ground communication antenna system

A method for ground to air communication includes receiving a first pilot signal on a first wide beam from a first ground base station by a first antenna element covering a first range of azimuth angles from an aircraft. Data is received on a directed data beam from the first ground base station by the first antenna element. A second pilot signal is received on a second wide beam from a second ground base station by a second antenna element covering a second range of azimuth angles different than the first range of azimuth angles. A signal strength of the second pilot signal is compared with a signal strength of the first pilot signal. Data reception is switched from the first antenna element to the second antenna element if the signal strength of the second pilot signal is greater than the signal strength of the first pilot signal.

The stationary elements (5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4, 5.5, 5.6, 5.7, 5.8) for influencing the direction-dependent reception characteristic are present in the beam path between the main reflector (2) and the horn (4). The stationary elements (5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4, 5.5, 5.6, 5.7, 5.8) may protrude into the free aperture area (6) of the horn (4). The stationary elements (5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4, 5.5, 5.6, 5.7, 5.8) are switchable dipole elements (5.1.1, 5.2.1, 5.3.1, 5.4.1, 5.5.1, 5.6.1, 5.7.1, 5.8.1) that are arranged with their dipole axis (15) in a manner to influence the reception characteristics of elliptically to circularly or linearly polarised high-frequency radiation.

Wideband simultaneous transmit and receive (STAR) antenna with miniaturized TEM horn elements

An antenna system capable of achieving simultaneous transmit and receive (STAR) operation over a wide bandwidth includes a ring array of TEM horn elements and a centrally located monocone or bicone antenna. The TEM horn elements each include a capacitive feed. The elements of the ring array are excited using a phasing scheme that results in signal cancellation at the location of the central element. The ring array may serve as either the transmit antenna or the receive antenna.
