Equipment failure detection in an electric power system
The present disclosure pertains to devices, systems, and methods for monitoring an electric power system. In one embodiment, a system may detect a failure in an electric power system. The system may include a communication interface to receive a first indication related to a condition in the electric power system, and a second indication related to the condition. The system may also include a test subsystem to compare the first indication to the second indication and to determine a discrepancy between the first indication and the second indication. A diagnostic subsystem may identify the failure based on the discrepancy between the first indication and the second indication. An alert subsystem may generate an alert based on the failure.

System for detecting and limiting the effects of loss of insulation of an electrical transformer
An electrical transformer includes a first winding, called primary, at least one second winding, called secondary, switches, and a current detection system, wherein it comprises at least one metal screen having a connection point linked to a neutral potential of the primary winding or intended to be linked to an electrical ground and placed between the primary winding and the at least one secondary winding, the screen being made of an electrically conductive material having a melting point higher than that of the materials constituting the windings; in that the primary winding comprises an input intended to be linked to an external energy source, the switches are placed at the input of the primary winding so as to be able to isolate the primary winding from the external energy source and in that the current detection system is configured to detect a current at the input of the primary winding or a current at the connection point and to close or open the switches based on the detection of the current, the detection system being differential or thermal.
Transformer isolation response using direct current link
Unique systems, methods, techniques and apparatuses of a distribution system are disclosed. One exemplary embodiment is an alternating current (AC) distribution system including a first substation including a first transformer and a protective device; a first distribution network portion coupled to the first transformer; a second substation; a second distribution network portion; a DC interconnection system coupled between the first distribution network portion and the second distribution network portion; and a control system. The control system is structured to detect a fault in the first transformer or the transmission network, isolate the first distribution network from the fault, determine a set point of the DC interconnection system, and operate the DC interconnection system using the set point so as to transfer a portion of the MVAC from the second distribution network portion to the first distribution network portion.
AUTOMATED SELF TESTING OF POWER GRID TRANSFORMER PROTECTION SYSTEMS
Systems and method for automated self-testing of a protective device for a transformer are disclosed. One system includes a protection circuit electrically connected to a transformer neutral, the transformer electrically connected to a power grid, the protection circuit may include a DC blocking component, a switch assembly, and a spark gap assembly each positioned in parallel between the transformer neutral and ground, a switch assembly. The system may further include various testing circuits configured within the protection circuit and switches which when actuated inject a signal to test various components in the protective device.
SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR IMPROVING RESTRICTED EARTH FAULT PROTECTION
A transformer system including a transformer including a set of wye windings, a three-phase current transformer, a neutral-current transformer, and a controller. The three-phase current transformer outputs a first signal indicative of a three-phase current conducting through the set of wye windings and the three-phase current transformer. The neutral-current transformer couples the current flowing from the ground to the neutral node of the transformer, and outputs a second signal indicative of a neutral current conducting from the ground node to the neutral node of the transformer. The controller receives the first signal and the second signal, determines whether an external ground fault condition or an internal ground fault condition is present based on the three-phase current and the neutral current, and determines whether a wiring error is present for the three-phase current transformer or the neutral-current transformer based on the three-phase current and the neutral current.
SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR ALTERNATING CURRENT (AC) INPUT SELECTION FOR POWER TRANSFORMER
Systems and methods for an alternating current (AC) input selection for a power transformer are disclosed. In particular, a connector is provided that is pre-wired to utilize internal wiring in the power transformer to provide a desired connection. A first option allows two transformers' input winding to be in series while a second option allows the two transformers' input winding to be in parallel. By moving the wiring into the connector, installation is simplified as the wiring has already been done. The installer need only attach the correct plug based on the desired voltage and couple the plug to the transformer. Further, the manipulation of thick wires is also avoided by the installer, further simplifying the installation process.
Method and system for improved operation of power grid components in the presence of direct current (DC)
Methods and systems for ensuring operation of one or more circuit breakers electrically connected on a phase of a multi-phase power line on a transformer electrically connected within a power grid at a substation are disclosed. The method includes detecting, at the transformer, a direct current component of a multi-phase power signal received at the transformer, the direct current component comprising a direct current received at a transformer neutral, the transformer neutral being electrically connected to a ground. The method further includes determining whether the direct current is above a predetermined threshold, the predetermined threshold being based on a determination that, above the predetermined threshold, at least one of the one or more circuit breakers is incapable of reliable operation. The method includes, in response to a determination that the direct current component is above the predetermined threshold, blocking the direct current between the transformer neutral and a ground.
