Robot electronics unit (REU) motor controller board (MCB)

The present invention relates to a Robot Electronics Unit (REU) motor controller board (MCB) with a trapezoid wave design, which can utilize power efficiently and reduce electromagnetic interference. The MCB uses a modulator or Buck Converter to regulate the voltage before it is passed to the motors used in robotic arms in space applications. The REU MCB includes: a commutator disposed on the MCB and connected to a three-phase induction motor; and a modulator disposed on the MCB and which precedes the commutator, the modulator which utilizes pulse width modulation (PWM) to regulate a voltage to the commutator and provide a predetermined current to the commutator. The modulator regulates the voltage by stepping it down from a 100V power input signal before the voltage is passed to the motor. The output of the modulator includes a trapezoid waveform design which controls the motor and reduces electromagnetic interference.

A power converter includes a plurality of switching elements, a converter circuit that rectifies an AC voltage of an AC power source, a DC link that receives output of the converter circuit and generates a DC voltage, an inverter circuit that converts the DC voltage into an AC voltage of a predetermined frequency through a switching operation, and a control unit that controls the switching operation. A capacitance value of a capacitor is set so that a maximum value of the DC voltage becomes twice or more of a minimum value. The control unit controls the switching elements such that two or more extrema appear in a power source half cycle in a waveform synthesized from second, fourth, and sixth harmonics that have a power source frequency as a fundamental frequency and are extracted from a waveform of an absolute value of a motor current vector.

A motor controller comprises a switch circuit and a control unit. The switch circuit is coupled to a motor for driving the motor. The control unit is configured to generate a control signal to control the switch circuit. The motor controller is configured to generate a current signal and a voltage signal. When a current phase of the current signal is at a predetermined crossing phase, the motor controller calculates a difference value between the current phase of the current signal and a voltage phase of the voltage signal, where the motor controller is configured to control the difference value. The motor controller may stabilize the motor and avoid noise by modulating the difference value. The motor controller may modulate the difference value, such that the difference value is equal to a predetermined phase difference.

SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR CONTROLLING OPERATION OF A MOTOR

A motor controller (100) is provided for smooth operation of an electric motor (102), which mitigates torque ripple, noise and vibration effects, and increases a life span of the motor (102). The motor controller (100) includes a speed controller (120), current transformation units (128 and 130), a current controller (132), and a pulse width modulation (PWM) signal generator (134). The current controller (132) determines a duty cycle of PWM gate signals used for controlling a rotor (104) speed within a particular sector (302A) of the motor (102) based on a reference quadrature-axis current and an actual quadrature-axis current. The PWM signal generator generates the PWM gate signals having the determined duty cycle, controls the rotor (104) speed, and incrementally varies a current speed of the motor (102) to achieve a target speed by modulating operations of a specific pair of inverter switches (502C and 502E) using the PWM gate signals.

Optimized brushless DC (BLDC) motor drive system

A drive system for a BLDC motor having poles implemented by separate coils that are activated in corresponding phases, which comprises a controller for controlling the level and phase of input voltages supplied to the separate coils; a controlled inverter with outputs, for applying phase-separated input voltages to each of the separate coils at desired timing for each input voltage, determined by the controller; a power source for feeding power to the controlled inverter; an up/down DC-DC converter for converting the feeding power to the input voltages according to a command signal provided by the controller. The controller is adapted to sample the instantaneous angle of the rotor of the BLDC motor; sample the input voltage input voltage and the current of each phase to obtain the input power P; and for each input voltage, calculate the phase difference value that corresponds to the input power and feeds the phase difference value to the up/down DC-DC converter, thereby causing the up/down DC-DC converter to apply each input voltage to its corresponding coil at a specific timing for obtaining an optimal match between each input voltage and the current that is being built up in the corresponding coil.
