Broadband, high-efficiency, non-modulating power amplifier architecture
Apparatus and methods for a no-load-modulation power amplifier are described. No-load-modulation power amplifiers can comprise multiple amplifiers connected in parallel to amplify a signal that has been divided into parallel circuit branches. One of the amplifiers can operate as a main amplifier in a first amplification class and the remaining amplifiers can operate as peaking amplifiers in a second amplification class. The main amplifier can see essentially no modulation of its load between the power amplifier's fully-on and fully backed-off states. The power amplifiers can operate in symmetric and asymmetric modes. Improvements in bandwidth and drain efficiency over conventional Doherty amplifiers are obtained. Further improvements can be obtained by combining signals from the amplifiers with hybrid couplers.
Envelope tracking power amplifying apparatus and method
An apparatus includes a first predistorter configured to calculate a first predistortion parameter and configured to distort an input signal using the first predistortion parameter to output a first distortion signal, a second predistorter configured to calculate a second predistortion parameter and configured to distort the first distortion signal using the second predistortion parameter to output a second distortion signal, a power supply configured to receive the first distortion signal to generate a first envelope signal, and configured to limit a bandwidth of the first envelope signal to obtain a second envelope signal to supply a source voltage, and a power amplifier configured to receive the source voltage and to output an output signal obtained by amplifying the second distortion signal.
Systems and Methods for Optimizing Amplifier Operations
Methods and systems for optimizing amplifier operations are described. The described methods and systems particularly describe a feed-forward control circuit that may also be used as a feed-back control circuit in certain applications. The feed-forward control circuit provides a control signal that may be used to configure an amplifier in a variety of ways.
Low distortion single-to-differential wide-band variable gain amplifier for optical communications
An amplifier, a circuit, and an optical communication system are provided. The disclosed amplifier may include a single-to-differential variable gain amplifier having a variable resistor switch that substantially always operates in a triode region at all time. Said another way, the resistor switch is configured to operate in a triode region regardless of whether or not a first portion of an input signal to the variable gain amplifier is larger than a second portion of the input signal. The disclosed scheme helps to keep the variable resistor switch in the triode region in all cases of operation, thereby maintaining the linearity condition and reducing distortion in the variable gain amplifier.
Overstress management for power amplifiers
A power amplifier includes an amplifier element and overstress management circuitry coupled to the amplifier element. The overstress management circuitry is configured to detect an overstress condition of the amplifier element and adjust one or more operating parameters of the amplifier element in response to the detection of an overstress condition of the amplifier element. Using the overstress management circuitry prevents damage to the amplifier element that may occur due to uncorrected overstress conditions which may degrade or destroy a gate oxide of the amplifier element. Accordingly, the longevity of the amplifier element is improved.
Switching circuit
A conversion circuit is disclosed. In one aspect, the conversion circuit includes a first input terminal for receiving a digital signal. The conversion circuit includes a second input terminal for receiving a bias voltage signal. The conversion circuit includes an output terminal for outputting a current. The conversion circuit includes a first and a second switch transistor connected to the first input terminal for receiving the digital signal. The conversion circuit includes a first and a second current source transistor connected to the second input terminal for receiving the bias voltage signal. The conversion circuit further includes a first branch, wherein the first switch transistor is connected to the output terminal via the first current source transistor. The conversion circuit further includes a second branch, wherein the second current source transistor is connected to the output terminal via the second switch transistor.

High efficiency radio frequency power amplifier circuitry with reduced distortion
Radio frequency power amplifier circuitry includes an amplifier element, power supply modulation circuitry, and bias modulation circuitry. The amplifier element is configured to amplify an RF input signal using a modulated power supply signal and a modulated bias signal to produce an RF output signal. The power supply modulation circuitry is coupled to the amplifier element and configured to provide the modulated power supply signal. The bias modulation circuitry is coupled to the amplifier element and the power supply modulation circuitry and configured to receive the modulated power supply signal and provide the modulated bias signal. Notably, the modulated bias signal is a function of the modulated power supply signal such that the modulated bias signal is configured to maintain a small signal gain of the amplifier element and the phase of the RF input signal at a constant value as the modulated power supply signal changes.
