Fast probing of signal quality in a WDM network
A method of interrogating a WDM optical communication system is provided to obtain one or more performance parameters. In accordance with the method, an optical probe wavelength is generated and possibly modulated in a prescribed manner. The probe signal is transmitted along a selected optical path through the WDM optical communication system for a duration of time that is less than a response time of network elements that impact signal quality along the selected optical path.

OUT-OF-BAND COMMUNICATION CHANNEL FOR SUBCARRIER-BASED OPTICAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS
An example system includes a hub transceiver and a plurality of edge transceivers. The hub transceiver is operable to transmit, over a first communications channel, a first message to each of the edge transceivers concurrently, including an indication of available network resources on an optical communications network. Each of the edge transceiver is operable to transmit, transmit, over a second communications channel, a respective second message to the hub transceiver including an indication of a respective subset of the available network resources selected by the edge transceiver for use in communicating over the optical communications network. Further, the edge transceiver is operable to receive, from the hub transceiver, a third message acknowledging receipt of a selection and a fourth message confirming an assignment of the selected subset of the available network resources to the edge transceiver.

The nonlinear transfer function can include a representation of any of end-to-end channel powers, Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR), Noise-to-Signal Ratio (NSR), Bit Error Rate (BER), Q, and Mean Squared Error (MSE).
Optical module
An optical module includes an interface electrically connected to an external device to receive a data signal to be transmitted, a signal processor configured to perform serialization and signal modulation on the received data signal, an optical transceiver configured to generate an optical transmission signal by receiving a direct current (DC) light source, in which a plurality of light sources having different wavelengths are multiplexed, from an optical power supply and performing optical modulation thereon through the serialized and modulated data signal, and an optical fiber connector configured to output the generated optical transmission signal to the external device and receive an optical reception signal from the external device.
Controlling Compensation of Chromatic Dispersion in Optical Transport Networks
A method (200) of controlling compensation of chromatic dispersion in an optical transport network. The method comprises determining (202) whether a residual dispersion, RD, of a first path (3) within the network is within a defined RD range and if the RD of the first path is outside the defined RD range the method comprises identifying (204) a first tuneable dispersion compensation module, TDCM, crossed by the first path (3), configured to apply a respective value of dispersion compensation. The method also comprises determining (206) a different value of dispersion compensation to be applied by the first TDCM to bring the RD of the first path within the defined RD range; if (208) the first TDCM is crossed by at least one other path (1, 2), checking (210) that the respective RD of said at least one other path is within a respective defined RD range for said different value of dispersion compensation; and generating (212) a control signal comprising instructions configured to set the first TDCM to apply said different value of dispersion compensation.
WAVELENGTH MULTIPLEXING COMMUNICATION SYSTEM AND WAVELENGTH MULTIPLEXING COMMUNICATION METHOD
A wavelength multiplexing communication system includes a master station apparatus and a plurality of slave station apparatuses. The master station apparatus includes a wavelength multiplexing communication unit. The wavelength multiplexing communication unit performs wavelength multiplexing communication with the plurality of slave station apparatuses by using optical signals having the number of wavelengths equal to or less than the number of the plurality of slave station apparatuses. The slave station apparatus includes an optical communication unit. When the main signal communication is performed in the host slave station apparatus, the optical communication unit communicates with the master station apparatus by an optical signal having the same wavelength as a wavelength used by another slave station apparatus in which a main signal notification is not performed.
