Communicating discovery information from remote control devices

A remote control device communicates remote control discovery information to a receiver. The remote control device is used to control a particular electronic consumer device. The remote control discovery information may, for example, include: a codeset identifier that identifies a codeset stored in the remote control device, device information, diagnostic information, and/or marketing information. The device information may include a device description, and/or device characteristics information that correspond to the electronic consumer device. In one example, the receiver is a set-top box that is connected to a central database through a network. The remote control discovery information may be used to identify the remote control device and the corresponding electronic consumer device. In addition, the remote control discovery information may also be used for diagnostic and marketing purposes.

Loading a machine code API onto an 8-bit virtual machine to enable new functionality

A compact, register-based, eight-bit virtual machine is realized on a resource-constrained device such as, for example, an IR remote control device. The IR remote control device includes a script interpreter, as well as loader API functionality and API functionality to support communication over a bidirectional link. The functionality of the remote control device is customized by loading either a machine code API routine and/or a script API routine onto the remote control device via the bidirectional link. A script is loaded via the bidirectional link and is stored in program memory. Once loaded, the script is interpreted by the virtual machine, thereby calling API functionalities provided, and thereby causing the remote control device to have a desired customized function. Providing the virtual machine on all the members of a family of remote control devices allows the same script to run on any remote control device of the family.

Creation and management of device versions

The claimed subject matter provides a system and/or method that creates, manages, or maintains multiple device versions in a network of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) devices. The system can include components that detect whether a device has joined the network and based at least in part on such indication creates a device profile the first time that the device is detected, establishes a version trail containing configuration settings specific to the detected device, and thereafter builds and maintains the version trail when the device joins and/or leaves the network.

Method and apparatus for secure display of visual content

Methods and apparatus for displaying visual content on a display such that the content is comprehensible only to an authorized user for a visual display system such as a computer, a television, a video player, a public display system (including but not limited to a movie theater), a mobile phone, an automated teller machine (ATM), voting booths, kiosks, security screening workstations, tactical displays and other systems where information is displayed for viewing.

Activity- based setup of a remote controlling device

A controlling device having an activity mode corresponding to a controllable activity in which activation of a command key within a logical group of command keys of the controlling device causes a transmission of command data to control one or more functional operations of an intended target appliance. For a controllable activity the controlling device has a memory in which is stored a plurality of predetermined appliance to logical group of command keys mappings. To configure the controlling device for the controllable activity one or more predetermined keys of the controlling device are activated to thereby designate one or more intended target appliances for the controllable activity. When the controlling device is then placed into the activity mode corresponding to the controllable activity, the controlling device will use the configuration to select one of the plurality of predetermined appliance to logical group of command keys mappings to determine which appliance command data to transmit in response to an activation of a command key within a logical group of command keys.
