A method and system for packet tracing is described. In one embodiment, a method includes selecting a packet for tracing through a cluster of a plurality of nodes. The method includes preparing the packet for tracing by generating a cluster-wide unique ID, associating the unique ID with the packet, generating a running counter, and associating the counter with the packet. The method includes generating a first record buffer on a first node of the plurality of nodes and recording the unique ID and an initial value of the counter. The method includes recording a description of an operation performed on the packet in the first record buffer along with a value of the counter. The method also includes transferring the packet to a second node, along with the unique ID, the value of the running counter, and an attribute that indicates that the packet is to be traced.

COMMUNICATION-PERFORMANCE CHARACTERIZATION VIA AUGMENTED REALITY

An electronic device that assesses communication performance is described. During operation, the electronic device receives information specifying a location in an environment. For example, the information may correspond to user-interface activity associated with a user interface. Notably, the user interface may include an augmented reality and the user-interface activity may include defining the location, such as by dropping a pin in the augmented reality. Then, the electronic device provides the information to an access point and/or a controller of the access point, where the location is within communication range of the access point. Next, the electronic device receives, from the access point and/or the controller, measurements of one or more communication performance metrics at or proximate to the location during a time interval. Moreover, the electronic device provides a graphical representation of the communication performance at or proximate to the location based at least in part on the measurements.

Mirroring network traffic of virtual networks at a service provider network

Techniques are described that enable users to configure the mirroring of network traffic sent to or received by computing resources associated with a virtual network of computing resources at a service provider network. The mirrored network traffic can be used for many different purposes including, for example, network traffic content inspection, forensic and threat analysis, network troubleshooting, data loss prevention, and the like. Users can configure such network traffic mirroring without the need to manually install and manage network capture agents or other such processes on each computing resource for which network traffic mirroring is desired. Users can cause mirrored network traffic to be stored at a storage service in the form of packet capture (or “pcap”) files, which can be used by any number of available out-of-band security and monitoring appliances including other user-specific monitoring tools and/or other services of the service provider network.
