A communication system that includes a server system, a voice terminal and a document reading apparatus. The document reading apparatus includes a reading unit configured to execute reading of a document, wherein recognition processing for recognizing a character written in the document is executed based on image data generated by the reading. Furthermore, the voice terminal comprises a receiving unit configured to receive a predetermined instruction by user's voice, and the server system comprises a processing unit configured to execute output processing for outputting the character recognized by the recognition processing by voice by the voice terminal based on receiving the predetermined instruction by the voice terminal.

An image forming apparatus which eliminates the need for a paper thickness detection sensor and saves time and effort for a user when performing remote scanning. An image reading unit of the image forming apparatus is connectable to an external client via a network and generates image data by reading an original. In the remote scanning, the image reading unit reads the original conveyed by a conveying unit in accordance with an instruction from an external client. A conveying speed at which the original is conveyed by the conveying unit when the remote scanning is performed is set in accordance with an original thickness setting. A first original thickness setting made on the image forming apparatus and a second original thickness setting made on the external client are obtained. When the second original thickness setting is different from the first original thickness setting, the original thickness setting is set to the second original thickness setting.

A reading device includes an emission unit that emits light; a first reflecting unit having a first reflecting surface that reflects the light emitted by the emission unit toward a document; an optical path unit including a second reflecting unit having a second reflecting surface that reflects the light reflected by the first reflecting unit and specularly reflected by the document, the optical path unit defining an optical path that guides the light reflected by the second reflecting surface; an image sensor that generates an image represented by light guided by the optical path unit; and a support unit that supports the first reflecting unit and the second reflecting unit and fixes a relative position and a relative orientation between the first reflecting surface and the second reflecting surface.

An information processing apparatus includes a processor configured to extract, from a document, words of plural categories, select one extracted word from each of the plural categories, generate a first character string by arranging the selected words in accordance with a rule, wherein the rule determines positions of the selected words within the first character string based on the categories of the selected words, in response to reception of an operation of changing a first word in the first character string from a user, present to the user one or more candidate words from the category of the first portion of the first character string, generate a second character string by replacing the first word in the first character string with a user-selected word selected by the user from among the one or more candidate words, and store the second character string in a memory in association with the document.

An information processing apparatus includes a processor configured to extract, from a document, words of plural categories, select one extracted word from each of the plural categories, generate a first character string by arranging the selected words in accordance with a rule, wherein the rule determines positions of the selected words within the first character string based on the categories of the selected words, in response to reception of an operation of changing a first word in the first character string from a user, present to the user one or more candidate words from the category of the first portion of the first character string, generate a second character string by replacing the first word in the first character string with a user-selected word selected by the user from among the one or more candidate words, and store the second character string in a memory in association with the document.

An image reading device includes a tray, a paper feed roller that conveys a sheet, a first sensor that detects a front end and a rear end of the sheet, a second sensor that detects the front end of the sheet, and a scanner that reads an image on a front side of the sheet and reads an image on a back side of the sheet. A controller determines a first time duration that elapses from the detection of the front end of the sheet by the first sensor to the detection of the rear end of the sheet by the first sensor and operates the scanner to read the image on the back side of the sheet over a second time duration equal in length to the first time duration. The second time duration begins after the front end of the sheet is detected by the second sensor.

The multifunction peripheral of the present invention includes an ADF document crop function. According to this ADF document crop function, front side image shaping processing for cutting out a front side document image corresponding to the image on the front side of a document, from a front side read image of the document and for correcting the tilt of the front side document image is performed. Then, on the basis of shaping information in the front side image shaping processing, back side image shaping processing for cutting out a back side document image from a back side read image of the document and for correcting the tilt of the back side document image is performed.

Devices and techniques are generally described for per-image printer setting optimization. In some examples, first data representing first input image data may be generated. A classifier network may generate first category data representing a predicted image category for the first input image data based at least in part on the first data. Second data representing a color of a printing medium and third data associated with a material of the printing medium may be determined. First printer configuration data may be determined by searching a first data structure using a combination of the first category data, the second data, and the third data. The first input image data and the first printer configuration data may be sent to the first printer. The first printer may be effective to print the first input image data using settings specified by the first printer configuration data.

An image reading device that efficiently performs shading correction that flexibly responds to changes in the diffusion properties of reflected light on the surface of a reading target efficiently performing same as a result of including: controlling a plurality of light sources so as to cause only a specific light source among the light sources to be lit; obtaining the diffusion state of a first reflected light generated by the specific light source being lit, in a state in which general shading correction data not dependent on the image reading target is generated; obtaining a diffusion state for a second reflected light generated by light being irradiated on to the reading target by the specific light source; and generating dedicated shading correction data that relies on the reading target, based on the first reflected light diffusion state, the second reflected light diffusion state, and the general shading correction data.

A document platen on which a document is placed; and a reading sensor having a light source for irradiating the document with light, are provided, and the reading sensor performs first scanning for irradiating the document with light at a first light quantity, and then performs second scanning for irradiating the document with light at a second light quantity greater than the first light quantity.
