A hemodialysis system includes a dialyzer; a dialysis fluid circuit including a fresh dialysis fluid pump, and a used dialysis fluid pump; a blood circuit including a blood pump operable with an arterial line upstream of the dialyzer, a medical fluid source in fluid communication with the arterial line between a patient end of the arterial line and the blood pump, a drip chamber located along a venous line; a blood rinseback sequence wherein blood is transferred to the patient by the medical fluid, wherein the medical fluid is introduced from its source into the arterial line between an arterial line patient end and the blood pump, and flowed through the dialyzer, through the venous drip chamber along the venous line; and a blood circuit priming sequence initiated in the blood circuit via the arterial line.

Balanced flow dialysis machine

A system and method for balancing flows of renal replacement fluid is disclosed. The method uses pressure controls and pressure sensing devices to more precisely meter and balance the flow of fresh dialysate and spent dialysate. The balancing system may use one or two balancing devices, such as a balance tube, a tortuous path, or a balance chamber.

Flow Balancing Devices, Methods, and Systems

The disclosed subject matter relates to extracorporeal blood processing or other processing of fluids. Volumetric fluid balance, a required element of many such processes, may be achieved with multiple pumps or other proportioning or balancing devices which are to some extent independent of each other. This need may arise in treatments that involve multiple fluids. Safe and secure mechanisms to ensure fluid balance in such systems are described.

Dialysis system having adaptive prescription management

An example peritoneal dialysis system is disclosed. The example peritoneal dialysis system includes at least one pump and a memory device configured to store therapy prescriptions including a low ultrafiltration (UF) therapy prescription, a first standard UF therapy prescription with a longer duration and a lower dextrose concentration, and a second standard UF therapy prescription with a shorter duration and a higher dextrose concentration. The memory device also stores a schedule indicative as to which of the therapy prescriptions are to be performed on specified dates. The system further includes a logic implementer configured to determine or identify a current date, use the schedule stored in the memory device to select the therapy prescription based on the current date, and control the at least one pump based on the selected therapy prescription to perform a peritoneal dialysis therapy.

A CRRT apparatus comprising a filtration unit (2), a blood circuit (17), a blood pump (21), a dialysate line (13) and one or more lines (8; 51; 57; 58; 63; 69; 67; 74) to transfer a respective solution into blood; a fluid source for each of said one or more lines, wherein said solution comprises at least one buffer agent in the form of bicarbonate or bicarbonate precursor. A control unit (12) is configured to receive a patient prescription and to determine a parameter (J.sub.buffer_load/BW) indicative of a steady state acid-base balance in the blood of the patient who has to undergo a CRRT blood treatment, wherein said parameter is determined as a function of the concentration of said buffer agent in said fluid source and as a function of the estimated or calculated patient systemic steady state concentration of bicarbonate and/or bicarbonate precursors.

PORTABLE ULTRAFILTRATION DEVICE

A portable ultrafiltration device having a suction bellows connected to a tube, passing through a solenoid valve, to a first dialysate connector of a hemofilter incorporated into a blood circuit having arterial lines, extending from a vascular access and passing through a peristaltic pump, and venous lines passing through an electronic safety block to the vascular access, and a second dialysate connector connected to an ultrafiltration pressure sensor. The elements of the portable ultrafiltration device are connected and controlled by an intelligent central unit powered by a rechargeable battery. Liquid collects in the space surrounding the fibres and in the suction bellows until the space is completely full.
