Electrokinetic route to a wearable device for kidney disease management
A portable device for removal of metabolic waste from the blood of patient having kidney disease or in need of hemodialysis is provided. Methods of hemodialysis employing the portable device beneficially obtain a dialysate by electrokinetic means from excess fluid in the peripheral blood of the patient in need thereof. The methods employ a branched microfluidic channel for the use of ion concentration polarization to separate charged from neutral species in blood to obtain the dialysate for undergoing hemodialysis. Beneficially the methods and device are resistant to biofouling, remove the need for a dialysate and/or dialysate reservoir, and provide a disposable, wearable device.
Method and device for purification of blood from circulating cell free DNA
The invention provides apheresis devices and their use for removal of substantially all types of cell free DNA (cfDNA) in patients' blood, including nucleosome-bound cfDNA, exosome-bound cfDNA and unbound cfDNA (including double stranded DNA (dsDNA), single stranded DNA (ssDNA) and oligonucleotides), to limit the negative effects of the circulating cfDNA and to treat various diseases.
RECIRCULATING FLUID FILTRATION SYSTEM
A fluid filtration system comprising a cross-flow filter is arranged to permit a first pump to recirculate part of the retentate of the filter to the inlet of the cross-flow filter and a second pump to return part of the permeate to the inlet of the cross-flow filter. A third pump is configured supply source fluid to the inlet of the filter. The flow path between the second pump and the cross-flow filter inlet may include an adsorption filter that may selectively remove contaminants, toxins, or pathogens in the permeate. A controller may control the first, second and third pumps to provide predetermined flow ratios among the fluid flow paths of the system in order to achieve a desired filtration level. This system may be applicable to the removal of harmful substances from blood, by first separating the plasma from the blood and then removing harmful substances from the plasma.
DEVICE FOR INLINE MONITORING OF FREE NUCLEOSOMES IN BLOOD
The present invention relates to an extracorporeal device or an ex vivo organ perfusion device comprising an inline monitoring method or device for measuring cell free nucleosomes, particularly an apheresis device comprising a monitoring method or device for measuring cell free nucleosomes in the blood of a subject.
VIMENTIN AND FRAGMENTS OR DERIVATIVES THEREOF FOR CORONAVIRUS TREATMENT AND PREVENTION
Embodiments of the disclosure include methods and compositions for treating or preventing coronavirus infection using soluble vimentin of functional variant or derivative thereof. In specific embodiments, a vimentin derivative comprising the rod domain is utilized for treating or preventing any disease in which the blocking of viral particles from binding cell surface receptors is therapeutic. In specific embodiments, a fragment of vimentin that comprises part or all of the rod domain is employed.
Targeted apheresis to treat preeclampsia
This invention teaches a targeted apheresis method of treating a pregnant woman with preeclampsia, or who is predisposed to developing preeclampsia, utilizing immobilized binding agents contained within an apheresis device to remove sVEGFR-1 and sVEGFR-2, and one or more other harmful factors associated with preeclampsia selected from a list that includes: sEndoglin, Endothelin-1, TNF, IL-1, IL-6, IL-12, IL-18, digitalis-like factor, ouabain-like factor, marinobufagenin, .marinobufotoxenin, and telocinobufagin. The binding agents used are antibodies or aptamers or binding peptides. Reducing the concentration of sVEGFR-1, sVEGFR-2 and other harmful factors in the pregnant woman's blood using targeted apheresis will alleviate or delay the symptoms of preeclampsia, and thus postpone premature delivery of the baby so that the baby is born at term or as close to term as possible.

The Use of a Hemocompatible Porous Polymer Bread Sorbent for Removal of Pamps and Damps
The invention concerns biocompatible polymer systems comprising at least one polymer sorbent with a plurality of pores, said polymer designed to adsorb pathogen-associated molecular pattern molecules and damage-associated molecular pattern molecules. Also disclosed herein are methods for reducing contamination in a biological substance, or treating contamination in a subject, by one or more pathogen-associated molecular pattern molecules and damage-associated molecular pattern molecules, by contacting the biological substance with an effective amount of sorbent capable of sorbing the toxin.
SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR COLLECTION AND/OR MANIPULATION OF BLOOD SPOTS OR OTHER BODILY FLUIDS
The present invention generally relates to systems and methods for receiving blood (or other bodily fluids) from a subject, e.g., from or beneath the skin of a subject. In some cases, the blood (or other bodily fluids) may be deposited on a membrane or other substrate. For example, blood may be absorbed in a substrate, and dried in some cases to produce a dried blood spot. In one aspect, the present invention is generally directed to devices and methods for receiving blood from a subject, e.g., from the skin, using devices including a substance transfer component (which may contain, for example, one or more microneedles), and directing the blood on a substrate, e.g., for absorbing blood. The substrate, in some embodiments, may comprise filter paper or cotton-based paper. After absorption of some blood onto the substrate, the substrate may be removed from the device and shipped or analyzed. In some cases, the device itself may be shipped or analyzed. For example, in some embodiments, a portion of the device may be sealed such that the substrate is contained within an airtight portion of the device, optionally containing desiccant. Other aspects are generally directed at other devices for receiving blood (or other bodily fluids), kits involving such devices, methods of making such devices, methods of using such devices, and the like.
