HEAT TRACE CHARACTERIZATION AND CONTROL METHOD AND SYSTEM

The present invention involves calibrating a control system to enable resistance-based control of a heat tracing circuit, that includes characterizing a piece of heat trace to determine a relationship between resistance and temperature, allowing for more precise control. Also described are different methods for practical resistance-based control of a heat trace system. Further described are several methods to monitor heat trace: including methods to enhance monitoring capabilities using a system operating model; comparison to historical operating data; and inclusion of information from external sources. Also provided is a method by which a piece of heat trace of unknown length and power factor can be controlled using the resistance-based method when other system information is available.

A vapor provision system comprising: a heating element for generating a vapor from a vapor precursor material; and control circuitry configured to provide power for the heating element for performing a heating operation to generate the vapor and to compare a measurement of a resistance value for the heating element for the heating operation with a baseline resistance value for the heating element for use in detecting a fault condition. The control circuitry is further configured to: establish the baseline resistance value for a first heating operation by making a measurement of a first resistance value for the heating element; and establish the baseline resistance value for a second, subsequent, heating operation by making a measurement of a second resistance value for the heating element if more than a predetermined period of time has elapsed between the first heating operation and the second heating operation, and otherwise using the same baseline resistance value as for the first heating operation.

MOVING HEATING ELEMENT

A heating element can be moved by a machine, such as a machine including a fan, an actuator, or a conveyor. The heating element can be attached to or embedded in a fan or an actuator. Or, the heating element can be attached to or embedded in a conveyor belt of a conveyor. A combination of a heating element and a mover machine can be further combined with a heat radiating wall. The heating element and the machine can be arranged behind the wall. And, when the heating element and the machine are powered on, the heating element converts electrical energy into heat, which increases the temperature of the wall, and the machine moves the heating element to be next to different areas of the wall. This allows for heat to be distributed more evenly to the wall than it would be if the heating element did not move.
