SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR AUTOMATIC BIDIRECTIONAL PRIMING OF A GAS-ENRICHMENT SYSTEM

Methods and systems for bidirectional priming of a blood circuit while a catheter is connected to the circuit that delivers gas-enriched blood to a patient. The system primes the circuit while the catheter is connected to the circuit by controlling a first flow control mechanism to close to prevent blood flow through the draw line to a catheter and causes a pump to circulate blood in a first direction through a mixing chamber and/or through a bubble trap that removes air bubbles from the circuit. The system controls a second flow control mechanism to close to prevent blood flow in a return line to the catheter while causing the first flow control mechanism to open after the second flow control mechanism is closed and while causing the pump to circulate the blood in a second, opposite direction through the mixing chamber that removes air bubbles from the circuit.

A method of establishing an anastomosis utilizing a harvested blood vessel includes connecting the blood vessel to an artery, thereby forming an anastomosis therebetween. The method further includes wrapping an outer surface of the blood vessel with a tubular support. The tubular support exerts a radially-inward force on the blood vessel.

Described are means for the direct and continuous connection of a catheter to the lumen of any tubular anatomical structure, or ductus, without medically significant leakage. A port implanted at the body surface with piping to a periductal collar allows drug or radionuclide delivery that bypasses the upstream lumen. The port allows injection, infusion, aspiration, or attachment of an automatic ambulatory pump. A superparamagnetic nanoparticle carrier-bound drug, for example, can be introduced into the lumen to pass downstream until the particles, with or without the drug still bound, are drawn into the lumen wall by a magnetized jacket surrounding the ductus. Such constitutes a method of drug targeting whereby a segment of a vessel or the territory supplied by a branch of that segment can be circumscribed for exposure to the drug. A jacket with side-entry connector positioned in surrounding relation to a lesion requiring treatment can itself be magnetized.

Methods and for treatment of cancer and other diseases including complications from late stage viral infections by inducing hyperthermia in a patient relying on withdrawing blood from the patient and returning the withdrawn blood to the patient to establish an extracorporeal flow circuit. Blood is heated by passing through the extracorporeal circuit at a controlled rate until a target body core temperature in is achieved. Usually, the blood will be subjected to a continuously re-circulating dialysis to balance electrolytes. Additionally, the blood will be subjected to a continuously recirculating regeneration through a carbon sorbent column where toxins and contaminants are removed. The blood temperature is maintained at the target blood temperature for a treatment period, and the blood is cooled after the treatment period has been completed. The method can also be effective in treating rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, hepatitis, sepsis, the Epstein-Barr virus, and patients with life threatening complications from other viruses, including the COVID-19 virus. A method for removing viruses from the blood supply in an external circuit is also presented.

Blood Pumping Device

A blood pumping device having at least a first pump and a second pump, and a first and second pump actuating means for inducing a blood flow in a body's circulatory system is disclosed. Each pump comprises one upper chamber having an inlet channel and one lower chamber having an outlet channel. The upper and lower chambers are separated by a movable valve plane provided with a valve. The pump actuating means are configured to apply a movement to said valve plane in an upward and downward direction between said upper and lower chambers in response to control signals from a control unit, such that when said valve plane moves in an upward direction the valve provided in the valve plane is in an open position allowing a flow of blood from the upper chamber to the lower chamber, and when the valve plane moves in a downward direction the valve is in the closed position and blood is ejected from the lower chamber through the outlet channel. The bottom part of the bag portion has a shape that makes a turn of between 110° to 150° to cause blood entering the lower chamber to hit the stopping surface and come to a sudden stop, wherein the turn causes the flow of blood along the inner surface of the bag portion to abruptly change; and directs blood at the stopping surface to continue flowing along the outlet channel.

A heart lung machine (HLM) includes: a pump actuator; an actuator control unit (ACU) operably connected to the pump actuator; a processing unit configured to receive a set of parameter data from the actuator; a display device configured to present a subset of the set of parameter data; and an input control device operably connected to the pump actuator. The input control device includes a rotatable knob. The ACU may be configured to: determine that the pump actuator has been stopped in response to a pump-stop trigger event; determine that the rotatable knob has been rotated to a first position; and in response to determining that the rotatable knob has been rotated to the first position, starting the pump actuator.
