Systems and methods for applying reduced pressure therapy

Embodiments of negative pressure wound therapy systems and methods for operating the systems are disclosed. In some embodiments, a system includes a negative pressure source, a wound dressing configured to be positioned over a wound, and optionally a canister configured to store fluid aspirated from the wound. The negative pressure source, wound dressing, and canister (when present) can be fluidically connected to facilitate delivery of negative pressure to the wound. The system can be configured to automatically detect whether the canister is positioned in the fluid flow path between the negative pressure source and the dressing while negative pressure source provides negative pressure to the wound dressing. Operation of the system can be adjusted based on whether presence of the canister has been detected. For example, a value of an operational parameter can be set to indicate that the canister is present.

A dressing for treating an open abdominal cavity with negative pressure. In some embodiment, the dressing may comprise a viscera contact layer capable of communicating a negative pressure to the viscera and capable of forming flow paths for a fluid through the contact layer; a fluid manifold capable of being disposed adjacent to the contact layer and capable of communicating a negative pressure to a tissue and capable of forming flow paths for a fluid; and a sensor capable of acquiring data associated with strain in one or more of the fluid manifold and the viscera contact layer

Wound-Dressing Conditioning Device

A wound-dressing conditioning device (12) for conditioning a wound dressing (14). The device (12) comprises a treatment-fluid flow path (20) and a waste-fluid flow path (22). A pumping means (24) is at the treatment-fluid flow path (20) and the waste-fluid flow path (22). The pumping means (24) can pump treatment fluid along the treatment-fluid flow path (20) pump waste fluid along the waste-fluid flow path (22), and apply negative-pressure condition to the wound dressing (14). The pumping means (24) has a controller to control the treatment fluid pumping, and a monitoring means for monitoring a volume of treatment fluid pumped to the wound dressing (14).

Wound treatment apparatus and method

An apparatus and method for aspirating, irrigating and/or cleansing wounds is provided. The apparatus and method include one or more of the following: simultaneous aspiration and irrigation of the wound, supplying of thermal energy to fluid circulated through the wound; supplying physiologically active agents to the wound; a biodegradable scaffold in contact with the wound bed; and application of stress or flow stress to the wound bed.

Containment devices for treatment of intestinal fistulas and complex wounds

Devices to contain and control the effluent or gastric juices of intestinal fistulas, other fistulas, stomas, and other wounds. The device includes a flexible fluid containment lineal strip defining a fluid containment wall which collapses when pressure is applied to the wound dressing, means for forming the lineal strip into any open or closed shape to fit wounds of various shape and size, means for joining the lineal strip to create closed effluent containment areas, means for creating a seal at the wound bed interface whereby effluent is contained, and means for interfacing with a pouch appliance to capture effluent and bowel contents until bowel contents can be emptied into a toilet or other waste receptacle.

Dressing with bolster for linear tissue sites

Dressings for closing an opening through a surface of a tissue site are described. The dressing includes a cover adapted to form a sealed space over the opening and a bolster. The bolster is adapted to be positioned adjacent the opening and includes a first plurality of holes. The holes have an average width to length ratio causing the plurality of holes to collapse in a direction substantially perpendicular to the opening. Systems, apparatuses, kits and methods including and/or using the dressing for closing the opening are also described.

Open-cavity, reduced-pressure treatment devices and systems

An open-cavity, reduced-pressure treatment device and system for treating a cavity in a patient's body, such as an abdominal cavity, is presented. In one instance, an open-cavity, reduced-pressure treatment device includes a plurality of encapsulated leg members, each having an interior portion with a leg manifold member and formed with fenestrations operable to allow fluid flow into the interior portion, and a central connection member fluidly coupled to the plurality of encapsulated leg members. The central connection member has a connection manifold member. The open-cavity, reduced-pressure treatment devices, systems, and methods allow for, among other things, removal of fluids.

Tissue healing

A system, method, and apparatus are disclosed for dressing a wound and for minimizing scarring. The apparatus promotes scar-minimizing healing of a wound where negative pressure wound therapy is applied, and comprises a wound contact layer containing silicone, polysiloxanes, or other related compounds.

Medical dressings, systems, and methods employing sealants

According to an illustrative embodiment, a system for treating a wound at a tissue site of a patient comprising a reduced-pressure source to supply reduced pressure, a drape adhering to the tissue site to cover the wound where possible leak passages between the drape and the tissue site may occur, and a seal disposed between the drape and the tissue site, is disclosed. The seal is adapted to react with a fluid to form a sealant substantially filling the passages in response to air leaking through the passages from outside the drape when reduced pressure is applied to the wound. According to another illustrative embodiment, a method for sealing a drape to a tissue site for treating a wound at the tissue site comprising applying the drape to cover the tissue site whereby passages are formed between the drape and the tissue site, positioning a seal between the drape and the tissue site wherein the seal is adapted to react with a fluid to form a sealant for substantially filling the passages, is also disclosed.

DRESSING AND APPARATUS FOR CLEANSING THE WOUNDS

A dressing (2) and an apparatus (1) comprising the dressing, for cleansing the wounds (5) in which an irrigant fluid from a reservoir (12) connected to a conformable would dressing and would exudate from the dressing are moved by a device (18) (which may be a single pump or two pumps) for moving fluid through a flow Path (6, 7, 9, 10) which passes through the dressing with a means for providing simultaneous aspiration and irrigation of the wound, to provide a desired balance of fluid at a controlled nominal flow rate that removes materials deleterious to wound healing, while distributing materials that are beneficial in promoting would healing over the wound bed.
