Frictional enhancement of mating surfaces of power cable installed in coiled tubing

A string of coiled tubing for an electrical submersible well pump has insulated power conductors encased in an elastomeric jacket within the coiled tubing. A textured interface between the jacket and the inner side wall of the coiled tubing enhances frictional engagement between the jacket and the coiled tubing. The textured interface may be formed on the inner side wall of the coiled tubing and consist of a roughened or knurled surface. A tape may be wrapped helically around the jacket, the tape having an outer side with a textured surface in contact with the inner side wall of the coiled tubing. The textured interface may extend continuously for the length of the coiled tubing.

A wireline cable includes an electrically conductive cable core for transmitting electrical power. The wireline cable further includes an inner layer of a plurality of first armor wires surrounding the cable core and an outer layer of a plurality of second armor wires surrounding the inner layer, wherein a diameter of the outer layer of the plurality of second armor wires is smaller than a diameter of the inner layer of the plurality of first armor wires.

HYBRID ELECTRO-OPTIC WIRELINE CABLE

A hybrid EO wireline cable includes optical fibers strategically placed within to allow acoustic sensing methods as well as provide power and electrical telemetry. The hybrid EO wireline cable contains optical fibers in the interstices among symmetrically arranged electrical wire bundles to allow a hybrid EO cable to be concurrently used for electrical telemetry and optical fiber sensing without interference in a wellbore environment. This hybrid EO cable maintains electric and magnetic field symmetry which allows an optimal electrical signaling rate through orthogonal propagation modes. By placing optical fibers symmetrically inside the interstitial spaces between electrical wire bundles, the cable maintains its optimal signaling rate and avoids the mechanical and electrical limitations that would be introduced when combining electrical wires and optical fibers in a wireline cable.

A cable including a fiber optic core configured to transmit data, a core conductor configured to transmit power and located concentrically around the fiber optic core, and a concentric conductor configured to transmit power and located concentrically around the core conductor and the fiber optic core. The cable also includes a dielectric layer located between the core conductor and the concentric conductor and configured to electrically isolate the core conductor from the concentric conductor.

Stress control cones for downhole electrical power system tubing encapsulated power cables

A stress cone for reducing electrical stresses is disclosed for use on terminated ends of tubing encapsulated power cable used in surface applications in a subsurface well power system employing electric submersible pumps (ESPs). The stress cone comprises an annular section about a longitudinal axis for receiving a terminated end of the TEPC in its first end and for abutting the terminated metal TEPC end against a metal shoulder at its second end therein, and an insulation chamber axially aligned with and connected to the annular section. The chamber comprises a metal interior surface symmetrical about the axis. The insulated TEPC core (without outer metal sheath) passes through the insulation chamber along the axis and then exits. The ID of the TEPC metal sheath and the inside metal surface of the chamber form a smooth ground plane transition surface. Insulation material surrounds the TEPC insulation layer within the insulation chamber.

System for wireline cable coating

A cable coater system for a downhole tool includes a cable coater. The cable coater may include a housing and one or more rollers that are coupled to the housing, wherein the one or more rollers are configured to rest on the downhole cable while guiding the cable through openings in the cable coater during wireline operations. The cable coater may remain on cable during all spooling (on and off) activities for the duration of operations and activated to coat the cable upon the final pull out of hole and prior to storage of the cable. The spooling in and out of the cable may further be automatically controlled by providing a positional indicator of the cable coater and thus where the cable is in three-dimensional space relative the spool.
