A battery including: a casing having a cylindrical portion, an end portion configured for covering an opening disposed in an end of the cylindrical portion, and an inner surface defining a chamber in which an electrolyte is disposed therein; a conductive surface located within the chamber adjacent the inner surface of the casing, the conductive surface being configured for electrical communication with an anode terminal of the battery; a permeable separator sheet located within the casing configured for electrically isolating the electrolyte from the conductive surface; a conductive rod having a first end configured for electrical communication with a cathode terminal of the battery, and, a second end of the conductive rod configured for electrical communication with the electrolyte; wherein the end portion and the cylindrical portion are movably attached to each other, the end portion and cylindrical portion being movable relative to each other between at least a first attached position whereby the end portion covers the opening disposed at the end of the cylindrical portion so as to substantially block ingress of a liquid into the casing via the opening, and, a second attached position whereby the end portion is displaced from the end of the cylindrical portion so as to allow ingress of a liquid into contact with the electrolyte in the chamber via the opening so that the electrolyte is suitable for allowing a potential difference to be generated between the conductive surface and the conductive rod of the battery.

Provided is an assembled battery in which a large number of flat batteries can be stacked easily. An assembled battery 1 includes stacked multiple flat batteries A, B, and C in the shape of an N-sided polygon (N is an integer of 3 or more). Each of the multiple flat batteries A, B, and C in the shape of the N-sided polygon has a positive-electrode terminal 21a and a negative-electrode terminal 61a that extend in different directions having 360/N in between, and the multiple flat batteries A, B, and C are electrically connected in series. The assembled battery 1 also includes multiple N-sided polygonal separating films 71 and 72 disposed between each pair of adjacent ones of the stacked multiple flat batteries A, B, and C to insulate the flat batteries from one another.

DEVICE AND METHOD FOR SENSING THE CONDUCTIVITY OF A FLUID

A device and a method for sensing the electrolytic conductivity of a fluid are disclosed. The device comprises a battery (1) having an oxidizing electrode (2) and a reducing electrode (3) connected by a hydrophilic and/or a porous material or an empty receptacle (4) providing a microfluidic cavity for a fluid (10), said battery (1) being activated upon the addition of said fluid (10) therein and providing electrical energy while the fluid (10) impregnates by capillarity said microfluidic cavity; and at least one instrument (5) connected to the battery (1). The instrument (5) has an equivalent impedance that makes the battery (1) work at a specific operating point allowing determining or discriminating among values of electrolytic conductivity of the fluid (10) and includes means for quantifying the electrolytic conductivity of the fluid (10), thereby inferring the conductivity of the fluid (10) from the performance of the battery (1).

Primary Battery and Moisture Sensor

Provided are an easy-to-handle primary battery capable of spontaneous power generation and a moisture sensor including the same. The primary battery includes a separator that is disposed between a negative electrode and negative electrode current collector (a negative electrode) and a positive electrode and positive electrode current collector (a positive electrode), and sucks up electrolyte solution by the capillary phenomenon with an exposed portion of the separator 5 exposed from battery casings.

An activatable battery includes at least one cathode, at least one anode, at least one absorptive separator layer in contact with the anode and the cathode and a liquid electrolyte separated therefrom and provided in an apparatus which liberates the electrolyte in order to activate the battery in such a way that it comes into contact with the separator layer and penetrates through the latter at least to such an extent that the electrolyte electrically connects the anode and the cathode to one another. The anode is formed of lithium or a lithium-containing alloy and the cathode includes elemental carbon and is formed of an unsupported film including carbon nanotubes or of a film formed of carbon nanotubes. An electronic igniter, a process for producing an activatable battery and a method of using a film in a battery are also provided.
