REDIRECTING STRUCTURE FOR ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES
A redirection structure for electromagnetic waves includes a multilayer structure and at least one antenna element. The multilayer structure includes a first conductive element, a conductive substrate, and a dielectric substrate arranged between the first conductive element and the conductive substrate and forming a wave guide. The antenna element is arranged adjacent an edge of the multilayer structure at an interface, the electromagnetic waves at least partially propagating in the wave guide along a first direction. The redirection structure further includes at least one dielectric cavity arranged at a predefined distance from the interface along the first direction. The dielectric cavity extends in a second direction away from the dielectric substrate at least partially through the conductive substrate.

Optical true time delay (TTD) device using microelectrical-mechanical system (MEMS) micromirror arrays (MMAS) that exhibit tip/tilt/piston (TTP) actuation
An optical true time delay (TTD) control device for controllably alters the transit time of an optical beam traveling through the device by using the tip & tilt capability of MEMS MMAs to control the entrance and exit angles to a reflection cavity to coarsely control the path length and transit time and the piston capability to fine tune the path length and transit time. The reflection cavity can be configured in one, two or three dimensions with or without an optically transparent solid medium and using additional MEMS MMAs to provide controllable mirror surfaces within the cavity to enhance dynamic range and tenability. The input MEMS MMA may be “segmented” to re-direct a plurality of channel optical beams from the cavity at the same or different exit angles. The segments may be coated with different AR coatings to provide channel optical beams at different wavelengths.
Phased-array antenna system having variable phasing and resonance control
A phased antenna array includes a plurality of variable length radiators arrayed in a geometric pattern. A length control mechanism is mechanically coupled to each one of the variable length radiators and responsive to radiator length control data to control the length of the variable length radiator. A variable phase delay circuit is coupled to each of the variable length radiators and responsive to phase delay control data to control a phase delay of a radio frequency signal coupled to the variable phase delay circuit. A controller has phase delay circuit control outputs coupled to each one of the variable phase delay circuits, and length control circuit coupled to each one of the length control mechanisms. The controller is configured to send radiator length control data to each one of the length control mechanisms and to send phase delay data to each one of the variable phase delay circuits.
Dual optical and RF phased array and photonic integrated circuit
A photonic integrated circuit (PIC) provides a common architecture to feed both optical and RF phased arrays that may be used for missile guidance, mobile data links, autonomous vehicles and 5G cellular communications. A plurality of switches are monolithically fabricated on the PIC with the optical feed network to switch the optical power of the phase-modulated optical channel signals between the integrated optical antennas and the RF antennas to produce steerable optical and RF beams. The photo-detectors and RF antennas may be discrete components or integrated with the optical feed network.
