DIRECTIONAL COUPLER FEED FOR FLAT PANEL ANTENNAS
Antennas such as flat panel, leaky wave antennas with directional coupler feeds and waveguides are disclosed. In one example, an antenna includes a surface having antenna elements, a guided wave transmission line, and a coupling surface. The guided wave transmission line provides a guided feed wave. The coupling surface is between and separates the guided wave transmission line and the surface having antenna elements. The coupling surface controls coupling of the guided feed wave to the antenna elements. The coupling surface can also spatially filter the guided feed wave to provide a more uniform power density for the antenna elements. The guided feed wave can be a high power density electromagnetic wave or a density radially decaying electromagnetic wave.

Uni-dimensional steering of phased array antennas
A phased array antenna system configured for communication with a satellite that emits or receives radio frequency (RF) signals and has a repeating ground track in a first direction, the antenna system includes a phased array antenna including a plurality of antenna elements distributed in a plurality of M columns oriented in the first direction and a plurality of N rows extending in a second direction normal to the first direction, and a plurality of fixed phase shifters aligned for phase offsets between antenna elements in the first direction and a gain-enhancement system configured for gain enhancement in the second direction of radio frequency signals received by and emitted from the phased array antenna.
Lossy Antenna Arrays with Frequency-Independent Beamwidth
An ultra wide band (UWB) antenna includes: (i) an array of antenna elements spaced from a central axis; and (ii) a network of lossy feedlines respectively communicatively coupled to the array of antenna elements. Each lossy feedline is periodically loaded with a resistance that is capacitively coupled to ground. Respective lengths of each lossy feedlines are selected to increase with an increase in distance from the central axis to achieve frequency independence of a radiated beamwidth from the UWB antenna.
Sidelobe suppression in metasurface devices
A transceiver system may include first and second metasurfaces, such as radio frequency (RF) metasurfaces or optically reflective tunable liquid crystal metasurfaces (LCMs). In one specific example, a transmit LCM may be tuned by a controller to steerably reflect incident optical radiation at a target transmit steering angle. A laser or other optical radiation source may transmit optical radiation to the transmit LCM at a first angle of incidence. The controller may tune the second tunable LCM to steerably receive optical radiation at a target receive steering angle corresponding to the target transmit steering angle. The received optical radiation may be reflected at a second angle of incidence to a detector.

A spatial power-combining device includes a plurality of amplifier assemblies, and each amplifier assembly includes an input antenna structure, an amplifier, and an output antenna structure. At least one of the input antenna structure and the output antenna structure may have a profile that includes tuning features, such as steps or other shapes, configured to tune or match with a desired operating frequency range. The tuning features may be configured with one or both of a signal conductor and a ground conductor of at least one of the input and output antenna structures. The tuning features may be non-symmetric across a particular signal conductor or a ground conductor, and the tuning features of a signal conductor may be non-symmetric with the tuning features of a ground conductor.
Antenna system facilitating reduction of interfering signals
Described embodiments include an antenna system and method. The antenna system includes a surface scattering antenna that has an electromagnetic waveguide structure and a plurality of electromagnetic wave scattering elements. The plurality of electromagnetic wave scattering elements are distributed along the waveguide structure, have a respective activatable electromagnetic response to a propagating electromagnetic wave, and produce a controllable radiation pattern. A gain definition circuit defines a radiation pattern configured to acquire a possible interfering signal. The defined antenna radiation pattern has a field of view covering at least a portion of an undesired field of view of an associated antenna. An antenna controller establishes the defined radiation pattern in the surface scattering antenna by activating the respective electromagnetic response of selected electromagnetic wave scattering elements. A correction circuit reduces an influence of the received possible interfering signal in a contemporaneously received signal by the associated antenna.
