POLARIZATION INSENSITIVE COLORLESS OPTICAL DEVICES

Embodiments of the invention describe polarization insensitive optical devices utilizing polarization sensitive components. Light comprising at least one polarization state is received, and embodiments of the invention select a first optical path for light comprising a first polarization state or a second optical path for light comprising a second polarization state orthogonal to the first polarization state. The optical paths include components to at least amplify and/or modulate light comprising the first polarization state; the second optical path includes a polarization rotator to rotate light comprising the second polarization state to the first polarization state. Embodiments of the invention further describe optical devices including a polarization mode converter to convert light comprising a first and a second polarization state to light comprising different spatial modes of the first polarization state; light comprising the different spatial modes of the first polarization state is subsequently amplified and modulated.

NARROWBAND DEPOLARIZED FIBER LASERS

Depolarized fiber lasers and respective methods are provided for increasing the SBS (stimulated Brillouin scattering) threshold. The laser source is constructed by a frequency-broadened seed source having a frequency bandwidth of less than 50 GHz, and the depolarization of the seed source is carried out at time scales shorter than 10 ns. At least one amplifier is configured to receive and amplify radiation from the frequency-broadened seed source and deliver the amplified radiation in the optical fiber. Depolarization may be achieved in various ways (e.g., using an interferometer with added length to one arm) and is kept at time scales shorter than tens of nanoseconds, typically shorter than 5-10 ns, which distinguish it from random polarization having polarization changes at longer time scales. Polarization maintaining fibers may be used to further increase the SBS by separating the polarizations states.

Amplification device with amplification stages with polarized SOAs and processing stage, for amplifying optical signals in a WDM transmission system

An amplification device includes an element for splitting an input optical signal into first and second optical signals having first and second polarization modes, first and second amplification stages each including polarized SOAs for amplifying the first and second optical signals depending on driving currents, an intermediate processing stage for compensating optical characteristics of the optical gain bandwidth of the first amplification stage depending on driving currents, an element for combining the first and second optical signals outputted by the second amplification stage to produce an output optical signal, and a control means producing the driving currents depending on information representative of powers of the first and second optical signals before the polarized SOAs of each amplification stage and on a targeted power of the output optical signal.

Pulse laser device

A laser device with a ring laser resonator includes a polarization maintaining (PM) fiber, a first quarter waveplate, and an optical isolator. The PM fiber has a light input end and a light output end and is configured to guide a first linearly polarized light with a first phase along a fast axis of the PM fiber from the light input end and a second linearly polarized light with a second phase along a slow axis of the PM fiber from the input end. The first quarter waveplate is disposed at the light output end of the PM fiber and configured to convert the first and the second linearly polarized lights into left-handed and right-handed (or right-handed and left-handed) circularly polarized lights, respectively. The optical isolator is configured to unidirectionally transmit a laser pulse in the ring laser resonator.

Polarization-Insensitive Optical Amplifier

Polarization-insensitive optical amplifiers are an alternative to current Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers, which provide wideband coverage while remaining cost and space effective for use in submarine cable applications. Polarization-insensitive optical amplifiers are an improvement to current semiconductor optical amplifier systems by providing desirable polarization-dependent gain and wideband coverage. This is achieved using polarization rotators comprised of a SOI-based waveguide and a twisted optical circuit.
