In a cross section including a central axis, a value L/D obtained by dividing an axial length L of an overlap portion where a metal contact surface located on a metal shell and on which a packing is in contact with the metal shell overlaps a projection plane located on the metal shell and on which a contact surface located on an insulator and on which the packing is in contact with the insulator is projected in a direction orthogonal to the central axis by a difference D between a radius of an outer circumference of a tube portion at a connection position to a step portion and a radius of an outer circumference of a leg portion at a connection position to the step portion is 1.2 or more. This ensures the force of constraint in the radial direction provided by the packing on the insulator.

Spark plug and method for manufacturing spark plug

A spark plug includes: a metallic shell having a through hole extending in a direction of an axis; a cap covering an opening in the metallic shell; a melt portion formed between the cap and the metallic shell to join the cap and the metallic shell to each other; and a gap extending from a specific space which is surrounded by the metallic shell and the cap to the melt portion and interposed between the metallic shell and the cap.

BATCH OF SPARK PLUGS

A batch of spark plugs. Each spark plug has a longitudinal axis, a central electrode oriented in the direction of the longitudinal axis, a ground electrode oriented at an angle to the longitudinal axis, such that a spark gap is formed between a tip of the central electrode and a tip of the ground electrode, and an outer thread for screwing the spark plug in the longitudinal direction into an inner thread of a cylinder head of a combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine, and has an annular contact surface oriented perpendicularly to the longitudinal axis and intended for bringing the spark plug to rest against the cylinder head. After the spark plugs have been screwed into the inner thread of the cylinder head, the ground electrodes have the same orientation with regard to a rotation about the longitudinal axis of the spark plug relative to the combustion chamber.

Ignition device

An ignition device includes a center electrode, a center dielectric covering the center electrode, a ground electrode disposed so as to form a discharge space with the center dielectric, and a high energy source for applying an AC voltage between the center electrode and the ground electrode to generate a streamer discharge. A distal end portion of the center electrode projects beyond a distal end of the ground electrode to an inside of the combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine to make a dielectric discharge portion. The ground electrode is formed with an airflow inlet and en airflow outlet at a lateral portion thereof for enabling an in-cylinder airflow to be introduced into the discharge space. A distal end portion of the ground electrode projects radially inward to make a ground electrode projecting portion so that a discharge space narrow portion is formed with the dielectric discharge portion.

A metal shell for a spark plug is made from a steel material that has increased carbon content and, in some embodiments, boron as well. The steel material is well-suited for extrusion because of its ductility, while maintaining requisite strength. The spark plug shell may have a reduced outer diameter (OD.sub.HL) at a crimped hot lock region, such as the case when the shell is used in smaller diameter spark plugs, such as M8 and M10 plugs. According to a non-limiting example, the spark plug shell steel material comprises 0.20-0.55 wt % carbon, inclusive.

SPARK PLUG

A spark plug having a center electrode, a ground electrode, and a noble metal tip that is joined to a part of the ground electrode near one end of the ground electrode via a fused portion. The fused portion extends outward beyond an outer shape of the noble metal tip so that a part of the fused portion is present at each of positions that are located inward from and separated from both side edges of the ground electrode in a width direction of the ground electrode. The fused portion includes a fused protrusion that is located near at least one of two side edges of the noble metal tip in the width direction of the ground electrode and that protrudes in a direction away from the one end of the ground electrode.
