A spark plug includes an insulator having a through hole formed in the direction of an axis, a rod-shaped center electrode inserted in the through hole and extending in the direction of the axis, a metal shell disposed around an outer circumference of the insulator, and a ground electrode electrically conducted with the metal shell and adapted to define a gap between the ground electrode and the center electrode. A front end part of the insulator has a front end surface, an outer circumferential surface and a curved surface region formed between the front end surface and the outer circumferential surface. In a cross section including the axis, a front end of an inner circumferential surface of the metal shell faces the curved surface region in a direction perpendicular to the axis. The curved surface region has a curvature radius of 0.2 mm to 0.8 mm.

An insulator is rendered less breakable. A spark plug insulator is a tube-shaped spark plug insulator having a through hole extending in a direction of an axial line. The spark plug insulator contains alumina as a main component and mullite at at least part of the insulator. Mullite is contained in only an inner circumferential surface of the tube-shaped spark plug insulator and in at least part of the inner circumferential surface of the spark plug insulator in an area extending toward a distal end from a portion having a largest outer diameter.

A spark plug insulator comprising a ceramic body with a photopolymerized and sintered microstructure. The spark plug insulator can have one or more complex geometries, such as dual axial bores, channels or grooves for wiring or the like, or internal wells. In one embodiment, an internal well is situated in the nose portion of the axial bore. The internal well has a terminal end, a base, and a ceramic bounding ring that is diametrically reduced with respect to a diameter at the base of the internal well. In some embodiments, there is a center electrode shield portion adjacent the internal well, where a diameter of the center electrode shield portion is diametrically reduced with respect to the diameter at the base of the internal well.
