Electric Propulsion System Having Integrated Electrical and Thermal Architecture and Related Methods of Operating and Implementing Same
Electric propulsion systems, and methods of operating and implementing same, are disclosed herein. In one example embodiment, an electric propulsion system includes an electric motor, a motor drive coupled to the electric motor, and a thermal management subsystem. The electric motor is a permanent magnet synchronous motor, and the motor drive includes each of an inverter including a plurality of wide bandgap semiconductor field effect transistors (FETs), and a controller coupled at least indirectly to the FETs and configured to control the FETs by way of pulse width modulation (PWM) control. Additionally, at least a first portion of the electric motor and at least a second portion of the motor drive are cooled by the thermal management subsystem.

An electric machine includes an active part having a slot, and a slot seal for sealing the slot. The slot seal includes a duct for guiding a fluid and an aperture configured to open the duct to an air gap of the electric machine and forming a nozzle designed to enable a phase change of the fluid.

A motor stator includes a stator core having a plurality of stator teeth on an inner diameter thereof and defining a respective plurality of slots between the plurality of stator teeth. A plurality of windings are disposed in the slots. A heat pipe network includes a plurality of evaporator portions including a hollow structure disposed in at least a portion of the plurality of slots and including an interior having a wick extending along the interior of the hollow structure. A condenser portion has an interior portion in communication with the plurality of evaporator portions and is located at an end of the stator core. The wick of each of the plurality of evaporator portions extend into the condenser portion.

The invention relates to a pod propulsion device including a motor casing (3) and a strut (2), which strut (2) is connected at a lower part thereof to the motor casing (3) and is arranged to be connected at an upper part thereof to a hull (1) of a ship. The motor casing (3) includes a housing (6) enclosing an electric motor (5) with a stator and a rotor, which housing (6) has an upper portion. According to the invention a stationary heat conducting means (7) is arranged in contact with said upper portion, which heat conducting means (7) is arranged to conductively connect the upper portion to at least one outer wall (21) of the strut (2). The invention also relates to a ship provided with such pod propulsion device and to a method for cooling a pod propulsion device.
