An electric motor includes a rotor and a stator formed by a plurality of stator phases. The stator phases include coils that extend fully about the motor axis of the motor. The stator phases further include teeth arrayed around the motor axis. Each tooth has a tooth face oriented towards the rotor. Multiple of the lamina forming each tooth are exposed at the tooth face and are configured to extend axially and radially to the tooth face. The stator phases magnetically interact with the rotor to drive rotation of the rotor on the motor axis.

A synchronous electrical motor, which may operate poly-phase electrical power, is configured to operate at a rated flux configuration and a high flux configuration. To enable the high flux configuration, some coils wound about the stator of the electric motor can be designated bypass coils and can be selectively disconnected from the power source supplying the motor with electrical power. The remaining permanent coils continue to receive full line power and generate a rotating magnetic field with an increased magnetic flux. At startup from standstill conditions, the bypass coils are selectively disconnected so that a flux boost occurs and a corresponding increase in output torque of the electric motor.

The second core surrounds a part of the winding, and has a pole face to which a magnetic flux is input in a second direction, and a pole face from which the magnetic flux is output in the second direction. The rotor is positioned spaced from the first core and the second core, and is rotatable about the rotational center, relatively with respect to the stator.
