MEDICAL TREATMENT SYSTEM AND METHODS USING A PLURALITY OF FLUID LINES

A medical treatment system, such as peritoneal dialysis system, may include control and other features to enhance patient comfort and ease of use. For example, a peritoneal dialysis system may include a control system that can adjust the volume of fluid infused into the peritoneal cavity to prevent the intraperitoneal fluid volume from exceeding a pre-determined amount. The control system can adjust by adding one or more therapy cycles, allowing for fill volumes during each cycle to be reduced. The control system may continue to allow the fluid to drain from the peritoneal cavity as completely as possible before starting the next therapy cycle. The control system may also adjust the dwell time of fluid within the peritoneal cavity during therapy cycles in order to complete a therapy within a scheduled time period. The cycler may also be configured to have a heater control system that monitors both the temperature of a heating tray and the temperature of a bag of dialysis fluid in order to bring the temperature of the dialysis fluid rapidly to a specified temperature, with minimal temperature overshoot.

Wave-based patient line blockage detection

A dialysis machine (e.g., a peritoneal dialysis (PD) machine) can include a pressure sensor mounted at a proximal end of a patient line that provides PD solution to a patient through a catheter. During treatment, an occlusion can occur at different locations in the patient line and/or the catheter. Elastic waves may be generated at a pump that introduces (e.g., for fill cycles) or withdraws (e.g., for drain cycles) the solution into/out of the patient line. For example, when the solution is introduced or withdrawn suddenly, elastic waves travel distally down the patient line until they encounter the occlusion, and are then reflected back (e.g., toward the pressure sensor).

FACILITATING CONNECTION OF HOME MEDICAL DEVICE TUBING

A tubing connection system is disclosed by which patients or others seeking to make connections between tubing sets, particularly for a home dialysis machine, can make those connections without having to hold each tube in each hand. In various implementations, the tubing connection device may include mechanisms for rectilinear and rotational motion to engage tubing connectors for connection between the tubing connectors as well as torque control features to prevent over-tightening. The system may also include automatically controlled gripping mechanisms to facilitate gripping of the tubing in connection with tubing connection operations. The system provides for facilitating a consistently secure connection of the tubing connectors.

A system and method for detecting and/or capturing a cassette is disclosed. The cassette capture mechanism may be used with a surgical console of a surgical system, wherein the system has a cassette receiving area having at least two alignment sensors and a plurality of capture plungers; and at least two capture hooks which may engage with a cassette, wherein at least one of the at least two alignment sensors produces a signal indicative of the presence of a cassette.

METHOD OF OPERATING A DISPOSABLE PUMPING UNIT

A method of operating a disposable pumping unit includes enabling the disposable pumping unit to be loaded into a peritoneal dialysis hardware unit between a door and a housing of the hardware unit; structuring the disposable pumping unit to have a fluid pump receptacle, the fluid pump receptacle constructed and arranged to extend from both surfaces of the unit so as to fit within a first opening provided in the door and a second opening provided in the housing of the hardware unit; and enabling the disposable pumping unit to be guided into the hardware unit such that the fluid pump receptacle becomes aligned with the opposing first and second openings when the door is closed against the housing.

A cassette holder includes an actuator assembly and a cassette plate. The actuator assembly includes an actuator (e.g., a valve actuator or a sensing actuator) and a shaft, with the shaft including a head, a base, and a perimeter groove defined between the head and the base. The cassette plate includes an opening aligned with the actuator and a keyhole at least partially aligned with the shaft. The keyhole is associated with a channel of the cassette plate, which is configured to receive at least a portion of a lever. The lever is movable between a locked position (in which the lever is primarily positioned within the channel) preventing removal of the shaft from the keyhole and an unlocked position (in which the lever is primarily positioned outside of the channel) allowing for removal of the shaft from the keyhole.

A fluid pumping system may comprise a pump and a fluid line state detector having, a receptacle, at sensor, and an illuminator. The system may further comprise a fluid transfer set including an output line for mating into the receptacle. The system may further comprise a controller in data communication with the fluid line state detector configured to power the illuminator and monitor an output signal of the sensor when the outlet line is in the receptacle to determine a dry tube light intensity value. The controller may be further configured to govern operation of the pump to prime the output line with fluid. The controller may be further configured to power the illuminator, monitor the output signal, and halt operation of the pump when the output signal indicates the light intensity value has dropped below a primed line threshold which is dependent upon the dry tube intensity value.

Systems with disposable pumping unit

An embodiment of a peritoneal dialysis system includes a peritoneal dialysis hardware unit having a housing with a first opening, a door coupled to the housing and having a second opening, and a solid pump piston having a solid piston shaft attached to or integrally formed with a solid piston head. The system also includes a stepper motor operable to cause the solid pump piston to translate; a disposable pumping unit having a first and a second opposing surface, and a fluid pump receptacle extending from the first and second surface to fit within the second opening. The hardware unit and pumping unit are structured and arranged to allow the pumping unit to be placed into the hardware unit such that the fluid pump receptacle is aligned with the first opening, the second opening, and the solid piston head when the door is closed against the housing.
