Efficient smart wideband linear hybrid CMOS RF power amplifier
A novel and useful linear, efficient, smart wideband CMOS hybrid power amplifier that combined an analog linear amplification path and a digital power amplification (DPA) path. PA path control logic analyzes the input I and Q signals and determines which amplification paths to steer the input I and Q signals to. The analog linear amplification path comprises digital to analog converters for both I and Q paths and one or more analog linear power amplifiers. The digital power amplification path comprises I and Q up-sampling circuits and I and Q RF DAC circuits (e.g., digital PA circuits). In operation, the PA path control logic compares the I and Q signals to thresholds (which may or may not be different) and based on the comparisons, selects one or more paths for the input I and Q signals. Whether the signals from the analog and digital amplification paths are to be combined or selected (i.e. switched), the PA path control circuit is operative to generate select (switch) control signals which are applied to summer/selector elements which generate the output of the hybrid PA.
Predistortion in satellite signal transmission systems
A signal transmission system for a satellite comprises means (31) for producing a signal to be transmitted; a first signal channel (37) which includes a first digital pre-distortion device (32) for applying pre-distortion to the signal; a second signal channel (38) for processing an envelope of the signal, which includes a second digital pre-distortion device (35) for applying pre-distortion to the envelope of the signal; and output means (34) for transmitting the signal.
Receivers for digital predistortion
Aspects of this disclosure relate to a receiver for digital predistortion (DPD). The receiver includes an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) having a sampling rate that is lower than a signal bandwidth of an output of a circuit having an input that is predistorted by DPD. DPD can be updated based on feedback from the receiver. According to certain embodiments, the receiver can be a narrowband receiver configured to observe sub-bands of the signal bandwidth. In some other embodiments, the receiver can include a sub-Nyquist ADC.
Reduction of second-order non-linear distortion in a wideband communication system
A system has a plurality of non-linear circuit stages and an intervening linear circuit stage. An input signal is provided to a first non-linear circuit stage, and from the first non-linear circuit stage, to the linear circuit stage. The first non-linear circuit stage applies a second-order distortion to the input signal and provides the resulting signal to the linear circuit stage. The resulting signal that is output from the linear circuit stage is inverted with respect to the input signal and suitably linearly processed (attenuated or amplified). This signal is then provided to a second non-linear circuit that applies a second-order distortion and outputs a signal that has an overall reduction in second-order distortion.
Multiple input single output device with vector signal and bias signal inputs
Methods and systems for vector combining power amplification are disclosed herein. In one embodiment, a plurality of signals are individually amplified, then summed to form a desired time-varying complex envelope signal. Phase and/or frequency characteristics of one or more of the signals are controlled to provide the desired phase, frequency, and/or amplitude characteristics of the desired time-varying complex envelope signal. In another embodiment, a time-varying complex envelope signal is decomposed into a plurality of constant envelope constituent signals. The constituent signals are amplified equally or substantially equally, and then summed to construct an amplified version of the original time-varying envelope signal. Embodiments also perform frequency up-conversion.
