Near-Field Electrostatic Communications System

A near-field capacitive data communication system that uses a variable capacitive device such as a PIN diode to change the capacitance of a conductive plate in response to either a high or low data signal. A detector attached to a second conductive plate that is in proximity to the first conductive plate measures the capacitance of the first conductive plate and outputs a corresponding data signal. The technique is wireless, since the two conductive plates are not in electrical contact with one-another, but rather share their static electric fields. A microcontroller can act as a detector by baselining the capacitance of the first conductive plate when its capacitance is in the low capacitance state. The technique is ideal for communication between a pair of toys that can be brought in close proximity to one-another. Since no radio frequencies are used, no special testing or governmental electromagnetic compatibility rules apply.

The present disclosure relates to a transmission/reception device and a transmission/reception method that improves a transmission characteristic in human body communication. The transmission/reception device includes three electrodes including a human body side electrode in contact with a human body, a space side electrode provided on a space side, not the human body side, and a circuit board provided with a circuit. At the time of transmission, a switch between the space side electrode and the circuit board is turned off to make a three-pole electrode configuration having superiority in the transmission characteristic, and each electrode is caused to function as an independent electrode. At the time of reception, the switch between the space side electrode and the circuit board is turned on to electrically short-circuit the space side electrode and the circuit board, to cause the electrodes to function as a two-pole electrode configuration having superiority in the transmission characteristic.

Disclosed is a system which extends NFC near field communication over a user's skin by converting electromagnetic signals into modulated alternating electric fields and vice versa. A modified patch is attached to an NFC device, which gets energized from its electromagnetic resonance which may contain data. The patch uses the energy to create an alternating electric field which couples into and spreads over a user's skin. The user may approach or touch objects which then get energized by the alternating electric field. The objects have a tag which modulates the electric field with data back over the user's skin to the patch, which then demodulates the data to modulate the NFC communication of the NFC device for further processing.

Analysis electronics are configured to detect a change in a receive signal produced in a second of the signal coupling elements that is acting as a receiver in the near-field region of the first signal coupling elements as a result of a signal given for one of the signal coupling elements that is acting as a transmitter being coupled into the second of the signal coupling elements, which change indicates the respiratory movement.

A near-field communication circuit includes an oscillating circuit having a controllable capacitor. A control circuit is coupled to the oscillating circuit to control the controllable capacitor. A battery is coupled to the control circuit to enable control when the near-field communication circuit is in a standby mode. The near-field communication circuit can be utilized by a mobile communication device.

In the enabled mode, the authorization device is configured to process a request to re-configure the authorization device received via the wireless interface, and to transmit authorization information to a reader device via the wireless interface.
