According to one embodiment, a free space optical (FSO) communication apparatus is disclosed. The FSO communication apparatus includes an array of optical sources wherein each optical source of the array of optical sources is individually controllable and each optical source configured to have a transient response time of less than 500 picoseconds (ps).

OPTICAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEM AND OPTICAL COMMUNICATION METHOD

An optical communication system allowing for transmission and reception of, between a dynamic bandwidth allocation functional unit that dynamically allocates a bandwidth for uplink communication and a subscriber-side communication device, transmission volume information indicating the amount of information waiting to be transmitted that is stored in the subscriber-side communication device and transmission instruction information for a provider-side communication device to instruct the subscriber-side communication device on a transmission timing for transmitting the transmission volume information, the optical communication system including: a transmission instruction information encoder that acquires multi-level transmission instruction information from the dynamic bandwidth allocation functional unit, converts the multi-level transmission instruction information into binary transmission instruction information, and transmits the encoded binary transmission instruction information to a transmission instruction information decoder; a transmission instruction information decoder that converts the decoded binary transmission instruction information into multi-level transmission instruction information, and outputs the multi-level transmission instruction information to the subscriber-side communication device; a transmission volume information encoder that acquires multi-level transmission volume information from the subscriber-side communication device, converts the multi-level transmission volume information into binary transmission volume information, and transmits the encoded binary transmission volume information to a transmission volume information decoder; and a transmission volume information decoder that converts the decoded binary transmission volume information into multi-level transmission volume information, and outputs the multi-level transmission volume information to the dynamic bandwidth allocation functional unit.

OPTICAL COMPONENTS WITH REDUCED INTERFERENCE

Optical components and associated methods of manufacturing are provided. An example optical component includes a body defined by an optical interposer substrate and a passivation layer applied to the optical interposer substrate. The optical interposer substrate defines a first surface of the body, and the passivation layer defines a second surface of the body opposite the first surface. The passivation layer includes a metallic shielding element configured to prevent interference between the first surface and the second surface. The optical component further includes an opening extending from the second surface to the optical interposer substrate, the opening defining an optical path through the passivation layer. The optical interposer substrate receives an optical signal from an optical transmitter supported by the second surface via the optical path.

An apparatus and method for signaling and transmitting data through an optical link is described. The apparatus may include a connector including a first plurality of contacts compatible with an enhanced SFP (SFP+) connector. The connector further includes an additional contact formed at a space adjacent to the first plurality of contacts. A tone generator couples to the additional contact to receive a first signal and to generate a first distinct tone indicative of the first signal for transmission via the additional contact. The method may include generating a first distinct tone indicative of a first signal providing control or status of an apparatus and transmitting or receiving a differential data signal over a portion of a first plurality of contacts compatible with an enhanced SFP (SFP+) connector. The first distinct tone is transmitted over the additional contact formed in a space adjacent to the first plurality of contacts.

OPTICAL TRANSMITTER

An optical transmitter includes an I-component optical modulation unit, a Q-component optical modulation unit, and a 2×2 optical coupler. The I-component optical modulation unit generates modulated light based on an I-component data signal. The Q-component optical modulation unit generates modulated light based on a Q-component data signal. The 2×2 optical coupler receives the modulated light generated by the I-component optical modulation unit from a first input port, receives the modulated light generated by the Q-component optical modulation unit from a second input port, generates two optical QAM signals having a phase conjugate relationship from the modulated light which has been input from the first input port and the modulated light which has been input from the second input port, outputs one of said two optical QAM signals from a first output port, and outputs the other one of said two optical QAM signals from a second output port.
