METHODS AND SYSTEMS FOR SHAPING THE RADIATION DISTRIBUTION PROFILE OF A PROTECTED RADIATION SOURCE USED FOR TREATING MEDICAL CONDITIONS
20190344096 · 2019-11-14 ·

A method and system may include a therapeutic agent having a radioactive source enclosed by a container. The container may be placed within a cavity of a medical device for treating animal tissue. The method and system allows a radioactive source to be manufactured in such a manner so as to control and spatially modulate the delivery of radiation doses to a treatment area of animal tissue, such as for tissue of humans. From the container, radiation doses and/or a radiation field are produced by the radiation source. The geometry and size of the radiation doses are controlled by the geometry of the container and the geometry of the radiation source as well as the type, number, and geometry of holes/slots in either the source material and/or a surface of the container.

The invention provides a system for the in vivo treatment of diseased tissue, the system comprising a first longitudinally extending surface and a second longitudinally extending surface coaxial to the first longitudinally extending surface to form a medicament carrying vehicle, wherein the vehicle defines a tunnel adapted to allow physiological fluid to pass through the vehicle. Also provided is method for treating, in vivo, diseased tissue, the method comprising inserting a housing into a tumor excision site and removably sliding a medicament vehicle within the vehicle so as to be encapsulated by the housing.

URINARY CATHETER FOR DETECTING RADIATION

Interstitial brachytherapy is a cancer treatment in which radioactive material is placed directly in the target tissue of the affected site using an afterloader. The accuracy of this placement is monitored in real time using a urinary catheter that locates the radioactive material according to the radiation levels measured by sensors in the walls of the urinary catheter. A scintillator that is embedded in the walls of the urinary catheter produces light when irradiated by the radioactive material. This light is proportional to the level of radiation at each location. The light produced by each scintillator is carried through optical fibers and then converted to an electrical signal that is proportional to the light and the radiation level at each location. The radioactive material is located according to the plurality of electrical signals. This location can be used as quality control feedback to the afterloader.

BODY INSERTABLE DEVICE HAVING ADJUSTABLE RADIATION EMISSION DIRECTION

The present invention relates to a body insertable device having an outer body being bent; and an inner body positioned inside the outer body, having an accommodation space in which the resource soured is accommodated, and being capable of rotating inside the outer body, wherein a radiation emission direction is continuously adjusted by rotation of the inner body.

Method and apparatus for brachytherapy featuring tracking via shape-sensing

A brachytherapy method and apparatus include implanting an applicator having at least one radiation source or seed receiving channel (62) into soft tissue adjacent a target region (40) to be irradiated. A high resolution planning image (64) of the target region including the applicator is generated, wherein the high resolution planning image is used for determining a three-dimensional treatment plan (66). A position of the applicator is tracked relative to the target region (40) and the treatment plan (66). Tracking the position includes measuring, via shape-sensing, a location and shape of the at least one radiation source or seed receiving channel (62).

INTERNAL BODY CAVITY THERAPEUTIC APPLICATOR ARRANGEMENTS AND METHODS FOR USING THE SAME

An apparatus for providing at least one treatment to at least one tissue having a first structural arrangement configured to expand a first portion at a distal end of the apparatus, a second structural arrangement configured to expand a second portion at the distal end and at least one lumen associated with at least one of the first structural arrangement and/or the second structural arrangement. The first structural arrangement and/or the second structural arrangement can be configured to position the at least one lumen at a particular position with respect to the tissue. A tip is configured to aid in the insertion of the apparatus into the tissue(s).

Brachytherapy device for facilitating asymmetrical irradiation of a body cavity
10413750 · 2019-09-17 · ·

The disclosure describes devices and methods for asymmetrical irradiation at a body cavity or site, such as after removal of tissue, e.g. biopsy or cancer. One device includes a lumen which is off-set or off-settable from a longitudinal axis to increase the intensity of radiation received from a radiation source by a first tissue portion surrounding the body cavity and to reduce or minimize radiation received by a second tissue portion (e.g. healthy tissue) surrounding the body cavity.
