A TEMPORAL THERMAL ABLATION REPRESENTATION FOR THERAPY DELIVERY

A system and a method for medical therapy, particularly ablation treatment, are provided in which diagnostic data may be processed and represented as a function of therapy time. This allows to appropriate plan and dynamically monitor thermal ablation therapy which significantly reduces the risks to damage organs and tissue outside the target area.

Imaging apparatus for biopsy or brachytherapy

An imaging apparatus (24) images an introduction element (17) like a needle or a catheter for performing a biopsy or a brachytherapy. The introduction element (17) includes at least one ultrasound receiver (21) arranged at a known location. An ultrasound probe (12) for being inserted into a living being (2) emits ultrasound signals for acquiring ultrasound data of an inner part (19) of the living being (2). A first tracking unit (3) tracks the location of the introduction element (17) based on a reception of the emitted ultrasound signals by the at least one ultrasound receiver (21). An imaging unit (4) generates an indicator image showing the inner part (19) and an indicator of the introduction element (17) based on the tracked location. A display (5) displays the indicator image providing feedback about the location of the introduction element (17).

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF TISSUE

A surgical method including positioning an optical probe within a tissue at a target location in a body of a patient; emitting electromagnetic radiation from the optical probe toward the tissue; and receiving a spectra at the optical probe; generating, based on the spectra, by a tissue classification system, a diagnosis classification indicative of a condition of the tissue and treating the tissue with a treatment modality selected based on the diagnosis classification. The spectra is generated by the tissue in response to the emitted electromagnetic radiation.

URINARY CATHETER FOR DETECTING RADIATION

Interstitial brachytherapy is a cancer treatment in which radioactive material is placed directly in the target tissue of the affected site using an afterloader. The accuracy of this placement is monitored in real time using a urinary catheter that locates the radioactive material according to the radiation levels measured by sensors in the walls of the urinary catheter. A scintillator that is embedded in the walls of the urinary catheter produces light when irradiated by the radioactive material. This light is proportional to the level of radiation at each location. The light produced by each scintillator is carried through optical fibers and then converted to an electrical signal that is proportional to the light and the radiation level at each location. The radioactive material is located according to the plurality of electrical signals. This location can be used as quality control feedback to the afterloader.

SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR ADAPTIVE RADIOTHERAPY

Interstitial brachytherapy is a cancer treatment in which radioactive material is placed directly in the target tissue of the affected site using an afterloader. The accuracy of radiation placement is monitored during the cancer treatment. The location plan for the radioactive material may be adjusted during the cancer treatment based on real-time analysis of the location and dosage of radiation measured in, at and around the target tissue of the affected site.

Described embodiments include an apparatus (20, 21), which includes a support (22), including an outer surface (24) and configured for insertion into a body of a subject. The apparatus further includes multiple atoms (26) of a radionuclide, which radioactively decays to produce a daughter radionuclide, coupled to the outer surface, and a layer (28, 33) of a polymer, which is permeable to the daughter radionuclide, that covers the atoms. Other embodiments are also described.

Rotating shield brachytherapy system

An apparatus and method for using rotating shield brachytherapy (RSBT). In an aspect, the RSBT system and method can be used to maintain or increase tumor dose relative to conventional techniques with a dramatic reduction in radiation dose to the urethra, rectum, and bladder in the treatment of prostate cancer through placing partially shielded radiation sources away from sensitive tissues. In an aspect, the invention is an apparatus and method for the precise angular and linear positioning of multiple partially-shielded radiation sources in interstitial needles. In a further aspect, the invention comprises a monitoring and control apparatus for the precise and simultaneous angular positioning of multiple shield-containing catheters in the RBST system by measuring and correcting deviations between actual and desired catheter angular positions and depth in real time before and during treatment delivery.
