Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. One method may include a user equipment (UE) determining whether it is configured to support a modulation scheme such as, a quadrature-amplitude-modulation (QAM). The UE may identify a plurality of transport block size (TBS) values based on whether the UE is configured with the modulation scheme, and identify a scaled TBS value that is based on a length of a transmission time interval (TTI). The UE may map the scaled TBS value to a TBS value of a plurality of TBS values (e.g., a plurality of TBS value options). As such, the UE may communicate, with a base station during the TTI, data on a transport block having a size corresponding to the mapped TBS value.

Controlling and reducing overhead in control channels in 5G or other next generation communication systems is provided herein. In connection with a data transmission between a device and a network node device, an overhead management component (OMC) can analyze one or more factors associated with the device, including speed or Doppler metric(s) of the device, type of service associated with the device, historical HARQ statistics for the device, configured threshold value for CSI estimation, device capability regarding redundancy version support, or other factor(s). Based on analysis results, OMC can determine whether to utilize a single redundancy version state or a multiple redundancy versions state. If the single redundancy version state is selected, OMC can generate control information that does not include redundancy version information, the control information being communicated via a control channel. OMC can communicate RRC signal to the device to indicate the determined redundancy version state.

Payload with synchronization information

Various aspects of the disclosure relate to communication using a data unit that includes a payload with synchronization information. In some aspects, a first apparatus may transmit a data unit that includes at least one synchronization symbol in the payload. A second apparatus that receives the data unit may thereby recover synchronization information from the data unit even if interference at the second apparatus prevents the second apparatus from recovering synchronization information in a preamble of the data unit. In some aspects, the second apparatus may determine, based on information in the at least one synchronization symbol, whether and/or when to conduct a spatial reuse transmission. In some aspects, the second apparatus may determine, based on information in the at least one synchronization symbol, an amount of time to defer transmission.
