Hybrid Automatic Repeat Request (HARQ) Mechanism for Multicast in NR

Embodiments include methods, performed by a user equipment (UE), for hybrid ARQ (HARQ) feedback in relation to multicast transmissions from a network node in a radio access network (RAN). Such methods include receiving, from the network node, first downlink control information (DCI) scheduling a first multicast transmission associated with the UE and determining a HARQ feedback mode for the first multicast transmission. Such methods also include, based on the first DCI, attempting to decode the first multicast transmission; and selectively transmitting HARQ feedback related to the first multicast transmission to the network node based on the determined HARQ feedback mode and on whether the attempt to decode is successful or unsuccessful. Embodiments also include complementary methods for a network node, as well as UEs and network nodes configured to perform such methods.

In an example, a User Equipment (UE) receives and/or detects a transmission of data from a network. The transmission of the data is addressed to a Group Radio Network Temporary Identifier (G-RNTI) for a Hybrid Automatic Repeat Request (HARQ) process. In response to receiving and/or detecting the transmission of the data, the UE (i) starts a first HARQ Round Trip Time (RTT) timer associated with the G-RNTI for the HARQ process, and (ii) starts a second HARQ RTT timer associated with a Cell Radio Network Temporary Identifier (C-RNTI) for the HARQ process. The UE starts a multicast retransmission timer for the HARQ process in response to expiry of the first HARQ RTT timer. The UE starts a unicast retransmission timer for the HARQ process in response to expiry of the second HARQ RTT timer. The UE receives and/or detects a first retransmission of the DL data addressed to the G-RNTI for the HARQ process. In response to receiving and/or detecting the first retransmission of the data, the UE (i) stops the multicast retransmission timer, and (ii) stops the unicast retransmission timer.

Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A base station may transmit a set of code blocks to multiple user equipments (UEs). The base station may receive feedback pertaining to reception of each of the set of code blocks at each of the multiple UEs. The multiple UEs may receive the retransmission message and extract a portion corresponding the set of code blocks that were previously unsuccessfully decoded. The UEs may combine the portion of the set of code blocks with the unsuccessfully decoded code blocks to create an updated combined versions of the code blocks. The UEs may decode the combined versions of the code blocks.
