Techniques to reduce network congestion

At a network-connected device, congestion at an egress queue can be detected. A potential source of congestion can be identified based on characteristics of a packet that caused the egress queue to become congested. The source of congestion can be a congestion group of transmitters. A group congestion message can be sent to the group of transmitters. The message can identify the packet that caused the egress queue to become congested. Transmitters can respond to the message by reducing their peak transmission rate.

Bandwidth management

A video packet stream is transmitted from a transmitting device to a receiving device over a network, by transmitting an audio packet stream to the receiving device, determining a measure of network bandwidth in dependence on one or more metrics associated with receiving the audio packet stream at the receiving device, and enabling a video packet stream in dependence on the determined measure.

Forward error correction for streaming data

A current frame in a sequence is encoded at a first bitrate to generate one or more encoded source frames. One or more previous frames in the sequence are encoded at a second bitrate that is lower than the first bitrate to generate one or more encoded FEC frames. The one or more encoded source frames and the one or more encoded FEC frames are packetized into one or more data packets.

ADAPTIVE CONTROL PLANE POLICING

Techniques are described for an adaptive CoPP that can adapt and change based on actual network control traffic rather than static CoPP rates. An aggressive CoPP can protect the CPU (route processor) of a network device, e.g., routers and switches, but may also penalize convergence and performance. An adaptive CoPP may protect CPU as well as boost convergence and performance parameters. In particular, traffic between two sites may be managed by proactively changing the thresholds of lower CoS traffic based on the CoPP utilization of various protocol/BPDU class traffic, thereby improving data plane convergence and application performance in scaled environments.
