The system provides input based on the received one or more content items and associated contextual information to a trained machine learning (ML) model, and receives, from the trained ML model, for each of the content items, at least one score value based on at least one predicted user response associated with potentially displaying the content item to the user at the UI. The system selects a subset of content items from the received content items based on the received score values and causes a display of this selected subset of content items in addition to a display of content generated by the chat application.

A method for providing location-based information via a temporary social network includes detecting each of a plurality of first user devices within a predetermined proximity of a physical location and, in response, connecting each of the plurality of first user devices to a social network that is associated with the physical location using a communications network. In some embodiments, each of the plurality of first user devices will be connected to the social network for a predetermined amount of time or for as long as they are in the predetermined proximity. While in the social network, location-based information about the physical location is received over the communications network from each of the plurality of first user devices connected to the social network. At least some of that location-based information about the physical location may then be over the communications network to a second user device.

A virtual mailbox is established for a first user based on a virtual mailbox definition specified by the first user. A message directed to the first user is received from a first device associated with a second user. A location within a real-world environment of the first user corresponding to the virtual mailbox is identified. A marker associated with the virtual mailbox is detected within the real-world environment of the first user. Based on detecting the marker, the second device presents the message overlaid on the real-world environment at the location corresponding to the virtual mailbox.

An environmental chat distance may be determined based on the number of words or characters in a text chat or voice chat between avatars within the area of the virtual universe. The environmental chat distance may be inversely proportional to the detected words or characters in the environmental chat.
