In accordance with an embodiment, an image processing apparatus comprises a platen cover, a detector, and a controller. The platen cover is attached to an upper surface of a platen glass in an openable manner. The detector at a lower surface side of the platen glass, is configured to detect an object on the upper surface of the platen glass. The controller is configured to determine an elapsed time from when the object is detected by the detector to when the platen cover goes into a predetermined state, and to determine a sheet size of the object according to a first technique if the elapsed time is less than a threshold time and according to a second technique if the elapsed time is greater than the threshold time.

According to one embodiment, an image forming apparatus includes a speed information obtaining unit, a speed measuring unit, and a determining unit. The speed information obtaining unit obtains a printing speed of a rated value of the image forming apparatus. The speed measuring unit determines a measured speed which denotes a printing speed when a sheet is printed by the image forming apparatus. The determining unit determines that the image forming apparatus is subjected to a modification when the printing speed and the measured speed satisfy a predetermined condition.

A blank sheet determining unit determines that the document is a blank document at least on the basis of the number of runs in the primary-scanning-directional-projection image and the number of runs in the secondary-scanning-directional-projection image.

An image processing apparatus includes a memory, a correction circuit, and a calculation circuit. The memory stores image data of an original image that is moved in a sub-scanning direction with respect to an image sensor. The correction circuit sequentially reads the image data from the memory line by line in the main scanning direction, extracts a pixel in a position corresponding to the inclination, and forms an inclination-corrected line in the main scanning direction to correct the inclination. The calculation circuit calculates an amount of movement of a corner of the original image with respect to the sub-scanning direction before and after correction of inclination of the original image with respect to a main scanning direction. The correction circuit restricts progress of formation of the inclination-corrected line based on the amount of movement. The amount of movement is applied when the inclination of the original image is corrected.

An image reader including a document table having a reference point, a first region of a sheet having a predetermined size when a vertex of the sheet is positioned on the reference point, and a second region, a changing mechanism changing a reading position in a sub scanning direction, and a controller configured to control the changing mechanism to change the reading position to a first position such that a distance in the sub scanning direction between the reference point and the first position corresponds to a length of the predetermined sheet size in the sub scanning direction, acquire specific digital data of the second region through image reading in the first position with a light source turned off, compare a particular value of the specific digital data with a criterion value within the second region, and determine a state of a document cover based on the comparison.

There is provided an image reading apparatus including a first reading sensor provided in a first reading unit and configured to read one surface of the sheet, a second reading sensor provided in a second reading unit provided to face the first reading sensor and configured to read an image on the other surface of the sheet, a first background portion serving as a reading background of the first reading sensor, a second background portion serving as a reading background of the second reading sensor, and a moving portion configured to integrally move the first reading sensor and the second background portion, wherein the first reading unit includes a sensor case in which the first reading sensor is provided, and the sensor case is fixed to the apparatus main body.

A controller of an image reading apparatus is configured to cause the reading device to read an image on an original with moving a reading location from a first position to a second position, after reading the image on the original with moving the reading location from a third position to the first position, the third position being a position between the first position and the second position and spaced from the first position by a particular distance and determining a width of the original in the main scanning direction. The controller is configured to further move the reading location from the second position to the first position, and detect an instruction to continue reading a subsequent original during a period before the reading location reaches the third position. When the instruction is detected, the controller stops moving the reading location when it reaches the third position.
