An image reading apparatus according to an embodiment includes an image reading unit that generates image data by reading an object. A background unit has a plurality of different background surfaces. A control unit determines whether the object has a non-standard size. When the object is determined to have a non-standard size, the image reading unit faces the object with a first surface, of the plurality of different background surfaces that is distinguishable from the object, positioned behind the object for reading. When the object is determined to not have a non-standard size, the image reading unit faces the object with a second surface, with a different color than the first surface of the plurality of different background surfaces, positioned behind the object for reading.

A reference unit has a reference surface. A shading correction unit determines whether a portion of the reference surface includes a contaminant based on image data generated by the image reading unit reading the portion of the reference unit. When the portion of the reference surface is determined to not include a contaminant, the shading correction unit generates reference data based on the image data generated by the image reading unit reading the portion of the reference surface determined to not include a contaminant.

Scanning devices include an input tray shaped to hold scannable items before scanning, an output tray shaped to hold the scannable items after scanning, a series of opposing belts positioned to transport the scannable items from the input tray to the output tray, and a round roller contacting a drum belt of the opposing belts. The opposing belts are positioned to have each of the scannable items constantly be held between the opposing belts or between the round roller and the drum belt of the opposing belts while the opposing belts are transporting the scannable items from the input tray to the output tray. A scanner is positioned in a gap between two of the opposing belts, and the gap is in a process direction that the opposing belts are moving the scannable items.

When the image detection unit detects that a front end position of the original document reaches a first scanning preset position, the control unit controls the scanning device to transport the original document at a second speed smaller than the first speed. After the scanning is completed, when the image detection unit detects that a rear end position of the original document reaches a first scanning end position, the control unit controls the original document to be transported at the first speed and discharged.
