The apparatus of wireless communication is a UE. The UE out of coverage of any base station may operate in a VLP mode and set a signal transmission power to a first power level. The UE may detect and connect to a base station, switch the power mode of UE based on a power mode of the base station connected by the UE, and switch the signal transmission power from the first power level to the second power level greater than the first power level. When the UE detects equal to or more than two base stations, the UE may select the base station from the equal to or more than two base stations detected based on a condition and connect to the base station selected from the two detected base stations.

A positioning unit of an access control and user tracking system includes an antenna, which is embedded in the substrate of a ceiling tile of a drop ceiling system. The antenna can be observable (embedded in the substrate of an exposed surface of the ceiling tile), or, alternately, not observable (concealed within the substrate of the ceiling tile). A pinhole camera for capturing video information is inserted through the substrate of the ceiling tile and protrudes from the exposed surface of the tile. A ground plane covers the unexposed surface of the ceiling tile. A control module, comprising a controller, a network interface, an antenna controller, a power supply, an omni directional antenna and/or memory for the positioning unit, is positioned on the unexposed surface of the tile.

Exit routes

A computing device equipped with a camera may be used to assist a person in planning and traversing exit routes for a premises. For example, a user may be able to interact with one or more user interfaces generated by the computing device to determine an exit route for the premises. The user may be able to identify various objects, such as stairs or doors, along the exit route. The user may be able to identify graphical or textual information that can be displayed at certain points along the exit route. After determining the exit route, a data structure for the exit route may be shared with other users and/or be used to assist a user in traversing the exit route. For example, the data structure may be used as a basis for overlaying graphics and/or text on a real-time video display as the user traverses the exit route.
